ParticipantWatching Channel Five last night on Martin Lewis’s It Pays To Watch programme, a lady recommended the use of Soap Nuts as well as putting vinegar in the dispenser instead of fabric conditioner????? 😯 😯

KeymasterYep quite a few people do this. It doesn’t work as it doesn’t remove any dirt really that water on its own wouldn’t and you end up smelling like a chip shop with a touch of BO thrown in for good measure.
Go figure.
But, I suppose, Martin Lewis has to find more and more tips on how to save money however it is all too evident from this and a few others I’ve seen that many are very poorly researched, if researched at all.
Don’t complain though Martin, where you are anyone doing this will soon have limescale wanting removed. 😉

True enough I guess Ken and it’s fair to say I’ve only ever come across two of my customers using these ruddy soap nuts and their machines were in pretty fair nick considering I must say, very odd?
Dunno quite what the idea behind the vinegar in the final rinse is all about though? Soap nuts surely continue to generate a soapy water each time it fills so it rinses in soapy water as well…quite bizarre. 😯
Both swore by those soap nuts but whilst I didn’t spot any adverse effects to their machines I never inspected their washing results either! As you point out they probably stink of BO possibly the whites are going grey and the towels as stiff as sandpaper for all I know? 😆
The real looneys are those that use those Eco Balls! I’ve spotted loads of those and in every instance their machines are solid with limescale. :rolls:
Back last November I went to a top of the range Bosch condenser dryer that wasn’t heating. When I hauled out the washing, they were using those dryer balls and the thin stainless steel drum was pitted to hell and looked like the inside of a cement mixer. When they buy these balls they are similar to the type of spikey ball you would give to a dog to play with. But as they get used more and more the heat turns them rock hard and boy do they do some damage!
So my conclusion so far is that there’s a load of soap nuts out their and many too have the balls to prove it…..WELL HARD! 😈

I had the unfortunate job of cleaning out a Zanussi washer drier after the customer tumble dried her washing along with the Eco balls. Needless to say, they buckled and split. There were little blue and red ‘stones’ absolutely everywhere. As fast as I was clearing them out they were more… it seemed like they were regenerating…..there were loads of them!!! 😯 What a thoroughly miserable and tedious job.
And guess what? She still swears by them. Mind you, she has every other stain removal product under the sun……..; :rolls:Steve.

Yes Martin, soapnuts will continue to be active through the rinses.
There is no bleach in them or, so far as is known, no natural anti-bacterial action so you will over time get a build up of scum etc., Ecoballs are the same deal, no bleach. However in the case of Ecoballs there’s also no soap at all, just a supposed reaction with water which is supposed to create some kind of hydrostatic effect IIRC. Basically, it’s all hokum.
For either there is absolutely no evidence at all, not a scrap, that they work. There is however a considerable body of evidence to say they don’t.
Whether people choose to accept that fact or wish to live like hippies is up to them.
As for dryer balls, as I said in another forum…
You wouldn’t hang your washing on the line and sit and throw tennis balls at it all day would you?
The person asking about them got the point.
