ParticipantFitted new brushes to this machine today, although the old ones were only about half worn. One brush was more worn than the other and was sticking in the brass holder. I had to file one edge of the new brush slightly to get a good sliding fit. The old brush had a spring loaded plunger poking out of the front wear face. I’ve never seen this before and wondered what this plunger is for? ❓

Is this the regular Siemens motor with the 154740 brushes or the FHP motor with the 173028 brushes you refer to? The former are poked into the holder and latched into place, the latter as a brush/holder assembly. 😕

Miele use a plunger to save the motor when the brushes wear. Their current motor is a CESET.

Correct, its a clever device that often saves the motor from damage. A plastic peg and spring are embedded in the carbon brush when its made. As the wear reveals the peg it is released under pressure of the spring and instantly breaks the contact rather than turning it into an arc welder. Dont see it much these days, cost cutting I guess. A very distinctive and tell tale noise was made when the drum was turned by hand.
As for the normal Bosch carbons being tight in the holder, i usually find that once they are pushed down to the business end of the holder they are perfectly free and that is, after all, where it counts. No need to file them IMO.

This brush was tight the whole way in so it was sticking. That’s interesting about the plunger breaking the contact. If I had removed these carbons as part of a routine check I would not have considered them due for urgent replacement. The shortest one is 13mm long. They are the loose carbon type, 154740.
