ParticipantHello all,
well I did a search and can not find the answer.. I hope that there is one.
AFter years of use, I suddenly have cracked glasses on every run of the dishwasher.
They are cracked internally. ie you can not feel the crack.. you an only see it in the glass. They have not fallen over, they have not banged into another glass.
Is there a temp issue, ie getting to hot OR is there an issue with my glasses which are dishwasher safe.. suddenly deciding they do not like being in a dishwasher ?
Thanks
Sarah

are you sure its not etching?…looks like scratches….you wont avoid it, probably cheap glass wear! or very hard water, maybe adjust the water softener according to the manual

Definitely full blown cracks inside the glass.. not etching at all.
Believe me I know the difference.

if it was down to cheap glassware surely they would have imploded long before this, wouldn’t they ?
These have been going through the dishwasher for years.
What is the easiest way to check wash water temp btw ?

Hi Sarah,
Wild guess here, but an educated one nonetheless, that it could be the structure of the glass breaking down and it’s weakened then cracked.
A similar sort of thing happens where you see chemical scratching and I suspect that what you are describing is simply the glasses “wearing out” as it were through prolonged dishwashing.
You can read about chemical scratching and the effects of it in in this article

thanks for the reply.. this NOT chemical scratching..
they have imploded.. there is a huge crack inside the glass.

I didn’t say that it was chemical scratching Sarah, what I’m saying is that due to age the structure of the glass may have broken down and that’s why they are cracking.
In other words, it’s just an age thing with the glass.
