The London Fire Brigade carry out ‘Home Safety Visits’ to around 40,000 London homes every year. The latest edict from them is that they ask that in order to pre-arrange visits those households are asked to cease cigarette smoke for at least 1 hour prior to there firemans visit and to leave windows open for adequate ventilation.

As a result of the latest government legislation on ‘smoking in the workplace’ private homes come within that category when officials need to call. Local council workers throughout England and Wales operate such a requirement and the London Fire Brigade are just following with the same procedure to protect the health of their own workforce.

Health & Safety gone mad it could be argued? But when will those employers within our trade insist on the same for their workforces I wonder?

    Something like…….?

“We will call to fix your washing machine this afternoon. If anyone in your household smokes, we must insist you extinguish your cigars, cigarettes, pipe and spliffs at least one hour before our engineer calls. We also advise leaving all windows open as our staff carry smoke detectors and will not enter should those detectors go off…..!!”

    Re: Smoking in the workplace

I have had a few customers jokingly tell me that they are not allowed to smoke in their own home while I’m on the premises. They usually say this just before lighting up 😆 It occurs to me that they don’t ask you about smoking when you get quotes for house or contents insurance. Surely smokers should be made to pay at least double?

I suspect that smokers don’t have things like smoke detectors in their houses anyway?……do they? 😕
