ParticipantMy daugter and her chap have had no mains gas for days due to a leak
from a water main of thousands of gallons of water which flooded into the Gas System ! Over a thousand houses have been affected and the Gas is not due to be reconected until after the weekend. Now I myself know little about the effects of water in a Gas main but the Gas Supplier has provided very little information about the imeadiate facts of this problem or the ongoing effects if any.
What they have said is that there are properties where the Gas meters will require complete replacment as they have had water through them.
If that is the case my daugther and her chap awoke to find the combi boiler having a fit with various lights flashing and water coming out of the Gas Cooker burners !. Are the Gas valves, Gas Regulators etc designed to have water through them like this and if there are no short term effects could there be longer term issues ?
Obviously if they are talking about changing the Gas Meters which cannot cope with water surely the Gas appliances are not ?
Anyone got any idea with all of this ?

Yes, simply report the problems to the gas company and they will inspect the system and carry out what remedial work is required (including making safe and replacing all parts affected and a new meter). All should be at their expense, though the timing of the completion of the work may be somewhat delayed as they don’t move too quick in cases like this! :rolls:

I think what I was asking Martin was that in the first instance they are visting each property and using compressed air to clear and dry the gas system. The properties that have damaged Gas meters will have them replaced. As for appliances like the Combi Boiler and Gas Cooker do you happen to know if water can damage them ?
Once the Gas company get the gas flow resumed they will fill their holes in and be off. If subsequently in the months to come there are problems with the above appliances would it not be much more difficult to obtain a remedy ? As I say I don;t know much about this but the fact that the Gas Supplier has NOT made any mention of such appliances being effected by this amount of dirty water suggests that either they know best and that its all perfectly ok, not to metion safe or they are hoping to airclear these homes and just replace their own meters.

I would think in most case that water ingress into a gas cooker would be a major headache, the pipework, ffds, thermostats and injectors will all have to be blown clear.I would imagine the combi boilers gas valve would have been affected and water would have got into the burner assy.
I would demand that BG service each and every appliance and have someone standing over them when they are doing it to se how much water comes out of the appliance also what sort of guarantee they will offer on the work they are doing,if they wont guarantee it then i wouldnt accept the repair.IMO -
