I do not have the user manual and can’ t find one online. sorry if this is a simple fix but i’m a bit lost. it makes acouple of quick beeps when the door is closed but nothing else happens.

Lamp 4 indicates the alternator valve failure, which is really rather unfortunate as this component is not fitted to your machine. This would suggest some sort of corruption issue with the computer. You could try the reset procedure and see if it clears it, proceed as folows:
Reset Procedure
Switch on and press the programme button 4 times, within 3 seconds. The 1st and 5th lamps should light…….. You may have to do this several times before it works! Assuming that it does, switch off, count to 10, switch on and run the rinse programme only.It may or may not work, you may have to try several times.
Corrution issues can be cause by the dispenser solenoid and by the mains suppressor breaking down.
Power off if you feel the need to open it up for further investigation.

many thanks for your reply penguin. I took things into my own hands this weekend and removed the rubber program select button. then by inserting a specialist tool (a chopstick) managed to select the program and the dishwasher works as before. so it would seem that it is a prblem with the button or at least the rubber part not working properly. I can live with selecting program via chopstick if it means not returning to washing up manually ! Thanks again ps i just got the user manual, brilliant, Thanks a lot.

Aha! Rubber selector button is p/no 756410561 – spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will get you one promptly. Probably a better bet than disking water ingress.

I too have a Smeg DWI 45.1. type 12140.
It was washing fine last night until I heard a thud. (Can `t honestly say it was an electrical thud or a mechanical thud, but a thud nontheless 🙂 )
Anyway the upshot is the dishwasher has stopped. The salt light is illuminated and will switch on and off as I switch the machine on and off.
There are no other leds illuminated.
I have tried the 4 pushes or the programme button within 3 seconds to no avail.
Any ideas where to look next?
Thanks in advance
Andy

Better have a read of THIS. No definite answer to the question, I’m afraid.

Thanks Penguin45 I did actually suspect that tracing the fault may be more trouble than its worth. I guess the machine must be 7 years old now, so I suspect that 7 years trouble free is a good enough reason to bin the machine and start again.
Ok what would you folks recommend for a trouble free slimline dishwasher
