Hello,
In the past, thanks to the folks on UK White Goods I was able to track down a replacement coil for a cooker we had no info on! Now you’ve set a precedent so I’m hoping you can help me out here as well. 😀
I have a CTD00 model tumble dryer that last week started making more noise than it normally does (not that it’s a quiet beast to begin with) on startup and then went back to normal volume, however it didn’t seem to be drying the clothes as well as it did before, though it *was* still drying them, it was just taking longer.
Having had an engineer out during the warranty period for it being louder than normal (The engineer replaced the front-plastic fan blade) I was wondering if it was the same issue but on further inspection it appears to be either an issue with the back fan and/or the motor. After doing a search on the forums here I can see that at least a few posts come close to what may be wrong with my own unit, the most relevant I think is below.
Can someone please advise me if they think this sounds like the same issue and if replacing the bearing on the motor may do the trick? I’ll answer any other questions you may have to the best of my ability.

The motor bearing is not a common cause of noise and is not available as a spare in any case.
The most common cause of noise is the front and rear drum bearings that fail on a regular basis due to the ultra tight belts used on these machines. I have also seen the odd jockey pulley collapse as well.
The rear fan is behind the rear back panel so is easy to access and inspect.
If the machine still has the earlier type of drum support wheels at the front of the drum then there is a complete kit to replace them with the old style bearing pads together with a new rear shaft & bearing and all the seals.
Not a simple DIY job, The drum needs to be removed completely to do this.
First thing to do is to remove the small cap mentioned in the post you linked to, it is dead centre at the back of the machine. That exposes the end of the drum shaft and rear bearing for inspection.
All with the plug removed of course. 😉

Secondly, thanks for the advice. I’m not entirely sure I’m competent enough for such a large DIY task myself. I’ll need to have a think about this one, thanks for your advice!

The whole kit is not that expensive, around £10.00 ex vat. A decent local independent engineer would almost certainly be cheaper than Hotpoint.
Well worth checking behind the rear back panel and the small rear bearing cover first though.

Would have to agree with Jim,check the rear fan is not slipping on the motor shaft,this would explain the poor drying performance as well as the noise.

Normal cause of noise on the CDT range is either the cooloing impellor which is on the right hand side of the machine (viewed from the front) or the drum catching on the rear panel on older appliances. It is a known fault with these tumble dryers.
