This machine has worked without any problem for 6 years. Virtually every time we used the machine we would use the normal cycle selection (No.2 ) The machine would make a sort of humming noise for a little while and then you’d hear the water coming in.

Recently when you start the cycle there is a sort of crunching /crackling noise over the hum until the water comes in and then it sounds like it always has.

Any suggestions on what this could be?

    Thanks

Maybe something in the drain pump area.
Access is by removing filters and looking at the LHS of the sump recess to locate a torx 20 screw.
Remove the cover that, that screw is holding and see if anything is in there that shouldn’t be.
Bearing in mind it may be glass ❗

Cheers. Removed the cover as you described. No glass but found a tiny mushroom shaped piece of plastic. Removed that and the machine is quiet again.

Just out of interest – should this area be full of water?

    Many thanks for your assistance

    Glad you sorted 😀
Answer to your question is yes but should be below the filters and just above that inspection plate; when in an empty state 😉
