KeymasterNope, we’ve been asked about it for a TV show. I do a bit for TV and reporters in general and they reckon it’s the oldest working cooker that they’ve found.

Quite possibly so!
In the 40’s the voltage was set at 200VAC and in the 60’s many of these ovens could be converted easily to 240VAC and many thousands were.
Unlike gas cookers/ovens of that era once ‘town gas’ was replaced by natural gas. Many could not be converted although those cookers that had a piezo electric gas torch. (that was the handheld torch connected by a small pipe to the supply and usually hooked on the r/hand side of most cookers) were converted only after that torch was disconnected!

As soon as I read this Martin I remember my dear old Gran having a cooker with one of the blowtorches on.

I remember the weight of the things, carry one out and then take in a new Belling 4-30t and it felt like an empty box.
IIRC there was a transformer in the base of some of them.
They don’t make em like that anymore.

O/T but my last house had a fireplace in the bedroom and still had the old lead gas pipe and tap for one of those same torches or p0kers, used to light the fire. The same fireplace had a hook up in the chimney for some kind of chain/winch system used for cooking pots.

I remember when I was a lad (early 70’s) my dad had made a coal fire lighter out of a length of lorry brake pipe, and a steel tube welded shut at one end and holes drilled in it. Held at tap and rod ends with jubilee clips.
The days before Corgi and safety regs loomed over everything.
It put me off ever working with gas forever.TC
