ParticipantI’m getting a bad gritting problem with this aging machine and hoped someone could help with solving this and advising on the right way to use this machine. I have to confess that, reading through past posts in the forum, we probably haven’t been treating it as well as we should have been – liberal use of 3 in 1 tablets in the assumption that’s all that’s needed 😳 Not had a dishwasher before and this one was here when we moved in (no manual though.)
I’m forever having to unclog the holes on the spinning arms. The problem seems to be small lumps of what looks like limescale but builds up very quickly. It would almost be quicker to do the washing up by hand than unclog this thing every 2 or 3 washes.
So my questions are:
1: What are the likely causes of the gritting? I’ve cleaned the trap inside the machine – are there other filters I need to look at? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
2: Where’s this stuff in the arms coming from and how can I stop it? It’s a devil to get out.
3: If 3 in 1 tablets are bad I take it I should use powder, salt and rinse aid. There’s a big, obvious container for the salt. There’s a small, white thing on the inside of the door – is that where the rinse aid goes? It’s got a small dial type thing on the inside with three numbered positions – what do they do?
I did say the questions were basic!
Thanks
Andy

Thanks – I’d read a couple of those but by no means all. Very interesting.
I now know the importance of the salt and rinse aid and not to buy cheap detergent! So I’m going to clean the machine thoroughly, ditch the cheap 3in1 tablets and get some salt etc. My question now is – what exactly do I do with them? All the rinse aid etc says to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions but but unfortunately I don’t have them (and I’ve read the article about why they’re hard to come by!)
I can see 4 “things” inside the dishwasher that I guess must have something to do with it all.
There’s a little basket that holds the tablet but when you pull it out there’s a small, shallow tray with min/max markings – I’m guessing the powder goes in there.
There’s a large screwcap with “salt” written on it that, when removed, reveals a compartment currently filled with water. It’s obvious that that’s where I put the salt but should it be full of water?
There’s a round plastic wheel-like device on the inside wall of the machine with a slider that goes from 1 to 5 – would I be right in thinking that that controls the salt output?
Finally there’s the small round thing on the inside of the door with a removable cover and a pointer that goes from 1 to 3 and a tiny slot – I suppose that this must be the rinse aid.
Does that sound right?
Thanks
Andy

KeymasterYes Andy, that sounds about right.
Using rinse aid will massively help with the problem and also get you better results. TBH just doing it right rather then taking the shortcuts some detergent producers advertise as miracles would save us a lot of grief.

Can I just say thanks again:) On top of a manual clean (although it wasn’t that dirty!) I’ve run one of those little cleaning bottle through it, filled up with salt, powder and (when I finally worked out exactly where it went) rinse aid. Just done a test load and it’s perfect. Consider me educated and very grateful!
