ParticipantWell it had to happen sooner or later.
Replaced a Zanussi front loader door interlock last week and the customer paid the bill no problem. Then had irate call this morning saying that I had ripped her of by overcharging for the parts. She had found it on eBay and it has a lot less than I had charged her.
Did a quick search and sure enough there it is pt no 1249675123 £12.75 + £2.95 p&p !!I cant even buy it for that.
Could accept if it was just a one off but seller has large range of parts at silly prices eg Bosch door seal 354135 £14.90 inc p&p,Hpt WMA bearings £11.70 inc. This seller is particularly cheap but the general prices are not much more than wholesale eg HPt carbons are generally about £5 inc p&p.
It is hard enough in this trade without but now we are not even allowed to make a profite on the parts we sell.
One wonders if the sellers have actually worked out their costs as by the time you have take into account eBay and Paypal fees into they can be hardly making any profit ! 😕April 9, 2008 at 3:15 am #248492admin

£17.46, i can buy with connect, +vat .but mr ebay did not call out and fit it,or work out what was wrong. so like other diy , ers , that i meet after thay could not fix there machines , thay have lots of parts that thay did not need to buy, i had one guy last year that wasted £70, on parts that he wanted me to fit to a dishwasher that would not heat , only for me to fix it, with a soldering iron! 😆 so he kept all the parts not needed 😥

Went to a job about a month ago where cust had bought a pump on e-bay… fitted it.. used it.. “pop” from machine smell of burning and a leak under machine..
Went out and main board had blown due to leak from pump and water had got on pump terminals..
Fitted new board and come to re-fit new pump and found couldn’t fit pump proply.. (Zan m/c with baynet type pump) checked with pump of my van and that fitted ok – when I examined pump more closely the wrong gasket was fitted to the pump making it impossible for it to locate propley..
Told cust to send bill to peps who supplied him pump but he just said he had learnt his lesson and would just call me instead next time..
Ahh.. some people just have to learn the hard way 😀

Would tell the customer I stick to the manufacturers RRP, I cant see as you can go wrong then.

Yes, there are no longer RRP’s.
SRP (suggested retail price) is okay though, but it cannot be enforced.
You can, legally, sell under cost if you like.

yes, the ending of RRPs is what started the price erosion of white goods. free market competition and all that, fair enough. But is the customer getting a better deal compared to the old days. Absolutely not imo. Good price aint the same as good value :rolls:
