I have a hotpoint aquarius 1100 (WM63 millenium edition – about 8 years old!)
When I select a program the machine starts to fill with water as per normal then the circuit breaker trips out at the fuseboard. The machine might sound as if it’s going to function normally and the water can be heard filling for about 2 minutes before it trips. It sounds electrical rather than a mechanical problem. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Probably a hole in the heating element. A common problem for the last few years on these machines is drum spider failure. The alloy casting that supports the drum cracks, allowing the drum to rub on the heater element, cutting a hole.

Thanks for the info. If that was the case would it be worth repairing or just buy a new one?

I tend to advise people to hang onto these small drum Hotpoints for as long as possible because they have advantages over many current machines. They are easier to work on and spare parts are cheaper so repair costs are reasonable. If my diagnosis is correct you will need drum support spider C00197587 and heater 1602026. You could get prices for these and see what you think. The job would take about an hour to do.

I’ve given the bearings and spider kit as it is eminently sensible to replace the bearings and seal when you have it stripped down to that degree. Basically it’s a, “you’re there anyway so you may as well” job.

To do the job correctly you should also always replace the drum front gasket, part number 168172, I would post a link to it but it doesn’t appear to be in the shop. 😉
Failure to renew this seal will lead to leaks in a large number of cases, covering it with sealant is a very poor way to repair, far better to fit a new one. 🙂

Thanks again for this invaluable info. Is it difficult to strip down the machine to do this repair and would i need any specialist tools. I’ve nver tried this before and I could do without the expense. Thanks

If you visit your local library they will probably have a copy of the Haynes washing machine manual. This gives a detailed description of bearing renewal for these machines. The only unusual tool you need for the drum spider renewal is a 30mm socket for the drum pulley locknut. You will find it easier to change the heater after removing the tub front as you can then get at both sides of its rubber seal.
