ParticipantThe drum bearing in my Bosch (WFF1201) washing machine appears to be getting quite noisy at the higher spin speed. It has approx 2mm movement on the shaft when lifting from the front of the drum. Does the drum have to come out to remove the bearing, with the weight attached? How difficult is it to extract the bearings from the cast (orange) triple carrier onto which the large drive pulley is attached. I am a moderate DIY’er with sufficient tools, but this is new to me. Any help & advice would be very welcome please. I see the new bearings cost around £68.

You should not need to remove the drum. You remove the pulley, unbolt the bearing cross from the outer drum, tap the end of the spindle to free it from the bearings and lift out the bearing cross. You can then drift out the old bearings and press or drift in the new ones.

Thanks for coming back so promptly. This sounds fairly straightforward & a relief not having to take out the drum. How long should it take, do you think? Any improvements on the £68 for the bearings, if so, where can I find them please? Thanks again.

HERE. Better?
Leave a couple of hours if this is your first go and make dure you have a big hammer to hand.

Thanks for that – will a sledgehammer do? Only joking!

Once you have removed the bearing cross you could take it to one of the smaller car repair garages where they might remove the old bearings and fit the new ones quite cheaply.

Thanks to all those who came forward with very helpful suggestions. I have now received the bearings and repaired the machine (overall about 2hrs) and it is spinning like a Rolls! I did use a solid oak block on the spindle before clouting it with a hammer & it came off without a hitch. The bearings also came out without too much difficulty. The worst problem was getting the third bolt into the three legged bearing cross – in the end I had to use a sash clamp, stretching from the front weight to the bearing cross to align the hole – success in the end! I know where to come for future assistance, when required. Thanks again.

Hi there,
I am having a similar issue with the same model. Recently I washed a couple of small rugs in the machine and half way through the final spin it started to make an awful noise.
Now altough the machine still completes a full wash cycle is makes a terrible noise especially on the spin (and the build up to a spin).
Looks like it could be a similar issue as to the one described here.
Any advice or help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam
