ParticipantThe fridge section has stopped working and the thermometer reads -30 degrees with power on or off. I guess this is why it doesn’t work. Is it possible to get a replacement thermometer? The unit is 9 years old, so not worth spending much on it.

OK, let’s see…..The fridge section has stopped working and the thermometer reads -30 degrees with power on or off.
the fridge is not cooling?…it gets to room temperature? it runs all the tome it’s plugged in? It doesn’t run at all when plugged in?the thermometer is PERMANENTLY reading -30 even when unplugged? and it doesn’t change the reading, although the fridge temperature alters?
Sorry, your post just didn’t make any sense at all, explain the problem and symptoms clearly and fully.
Lastly, do you really mean “thermometer” and not “thermostat”
I’m sure you’ll get a helpful reply , once someone can understand the question!

ParticipantI beleive that model has a dial based thermometer for the freezer.
So its either a thermostat or compressor on the fridge side.

Sorry I wasn’t clear. The fridge is at room temperature. It doesn’t run when plugged in. The thermometer permanently reads -30 even when unplugged (it used to read around zero when it worked). And I do mean thermometer. I thought because the thermometer reads -30, the thermostat wouldn’t start the compressor.

And the expert has already given you the diagnosis, above 😀
From his knowledgeable reply, it would seem the ‘stat and thermometer are ,effectively , the same unit…(the thermometer is not a standalone function)
I’d be checking that first, assuming you have done the obvious, like checking the plugtop-fuse.
regarding cost/price how much a year ,does the cost equate to? use that to judge how much is an economical repair….many half-decent fridges will do 15-20years on the compressor, 30 isn’t unheard of….so it’s probable that another 5 years life could be had for under £100…sounds a good gamble to me .
If you don’t feel competent to go this far, I’d use someone from the “engineer”contact-list, here.
these guys are obviously concientious and proud of their work…..you can be pretty certain they won’t scam or con you. 🙂
