ParticipantHi – we have a Maytag GS2928EEDW. This is a side by side design, which is around 10 years old. Recently, we have noticed the fridge part was not been keeping things very cold and today we noticed that although it is still cold in the freezer compartment, some things are no longer frozen.
Using my limited knowledge and the excellent info I’ve found on this site, I have checked the obvious things. I’ve removed the rear panel and cleaned the dust away from the fins; checked the fan is running; checked the door seals etc
Given the age of the unit and the fact that both fridge and freezer compartments are still being cooled, just not very well, am I right in thinking that this is most likely a problem with the compressor ? If so, does anyone know how easy it is to get parts for Maytags of this vintage ?
Many thanks,
Pete

hello pete, the most likely problem would not be the compressor, but the heating element that brings about the defrost, in the freezer section of your fridge.
of course in reality, it could be any one of a number of things, but talking in terms of probability, the defrost heater would be a good place to start.cheers.

ParticipantOK, thanks Alf – sounds like I need to call an engineer to have a look. Hopefully it will be economical to repair

ParticipantI’m in Worthing, West Sussex. Nothing came up for Maytag using Repairs@ but thanks for the pointer. A local engineer just left – you were spot on with your diagnosis – the freezer was all frosted up because of a faulty heating element. Estimate of £160-185 plus VAT to supply and fit a new one.
Hmm.hard to know what to do now. I could replace the element and it will run for another xx years. On the other hand, it’s 10 years old now so this might be the start of a series of component failures. What’s the usual life expectancy of a Maytag fridge/freezer of this vintge ?
In addition, the fridge door handle is broken and the freezer door is not always sealing properly at the top apparently. I hate to throw away something when it is still serviceable, but I think It may be time for a new one. The Maytag is far bigger than we actually need, so the replacement should cost a fair bit less than an equivalent American style unit.

Out of interest who did you get to undertake the repair in your area?
Would be confident that the machine will continue to give good service after heaters fitted But Im biassed..June 5, 2008 at 10:44 am #253357zoomout
ParticipantA company called Geoff Dawes Refrigeration, based in Bognor. They were recommended by a guy who we’ve used before for a dishwasher repair, but who does not deal in Regrigeration repairs.
Interesting that you think the machine would continue to give good service because I’m just about to phone him and give the go ahead to order the parts required. Why do you say you are biased, is that because you deal with Maytags a lot ?
Kind regards, Pete
