ParticipantLast Friday I noticed the fridge was dead an light not on. Wifey was demanding, whilst holding a rolling pin, that I fix it so, checked socket and plug etc and all ok.
Changed stat and it worked. Although light still off so checked bulb and its dead. Now the firdge works but ice is forming on inside back of fridge no matter what setting you have stat on.4 years old
Only 3 connectors on stat and one of them is earth so cant’ do wrong, or can I?
Used a universal stat as per shop ex engineer say soAny help appriiciated and could save my life or a severe battering from my old gal. 🙁

Is the ‘universal stat’ a VT9/VL9 and if so which wires have you connected to what?

The ice forms on the inside back of fridge and has not done it on such a scale in 4 years. Looks like snow about 1/4 inch hick. Also water in jug is freezing up when stat is on 1. We used to have old sat on no. 3 for 4 years and no freezing
Universal stat is a VARIFIX VC1 as supplied by engineer in shop saying all enginners use em??????
It only as 3 connections. one is obviouse to me an earth :rolls: (I am ex engineer level but not fidges) The back connecetor has live brown on it and the front connector has a white wire. When i say front I mean near stat adjustment knob. Thanks for taking time to reply. Mucho appriciated 😀

Hi
VC1 is wrong stat, its used on fridges with ice compartment you need a stat for a fridge that defrosts rear plate before fridge cuts back in. As Dales Electronic says a VT9 or VL9 depending on type of fridge

Cheers Mike I will take it back to shop in the morno and see what he says to that. He did give me the old “I have been an enginner for years” and I did tell him what model it was so this is interesting
Thank You
to all

Just looked at original stat and it does indeed have 4 connection ponts. Mind u I took a photo of it before removal and it only has the two outer ones in use plus the earth. The middle one was not used????

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint RLA84 Dead UPDATE
Have this morno put the crorrect stat in, but still no change. Ths snowy ice is still on the inside back wall. The fridge is now switched off awaiting the defrost to perhaps try again.
Heater area perhaps?
Any further help greatly appricated

pin 3 has brown wire. This also has a piggy back brown attached to it.
Earth to obvious earth metal casing around stat or “B” pin.
Pin 4 has two spade flats and I have connected white wire to the top one i.e if you hold the stat with adjuster knob facing you with thermo tube at the left
pin 6 is just an empty socket
b4 taking old stat off I photographed it to ensure it went back the same way.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Oh Dear as head bounced off wifeys rolling pin
Would it not produce any ice if the comp was gone or weak?

ParticipantIf its a vt9 an only to wires try connecting on pin 4 and pin 6
Pin 3 will be permantly live and is only a light connection.
Pin4 will be live
Pin 6 will be compressor feed.At the moment if you are using pin 3 & 4 it will run all the time as the thermostat will not let the unit cycle.
