First, I’d like to say how helpful I’ve found this forum. I hope someone will have some advice for me.

My dishwasher is a Whirlpool ADP 9408, purchased in France about 8 or 9 years ago. I don’t know if it has a different model number elsewhere.

The problem is this: when I turn it on, the drain pump goes but then it never “switches gears” to start filling. It hums for several minutes before stopping. The on light then blinks, with no pattern, until I turn it off.

I have noticed that the “bouchon de cuve” is torn. This is a rubber diaphragm on the “ceiling” of the tank. It looks like it has become brittle with age and no longer makes a seal. Could this be the problem? I don’t know the name for this part in English and can’t find it anywhere listed in English.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance.

The cap in the roof is p/no 481246278244. If it is in poor condition, water will leak across the roof of the machine and run down into the base.

It does sound as though you are describing a no-fill problem – the initial part of any programme is for the drain pump to run for about one minute; this should be followed by water fill. The humming noise could well be from the valve, but the water is not coming through – check for water being turned on and trapped or kinked fill hose.

Thanks very much for your quick reply. I’m sorry I didn’t respond sooner.

I’ve checked the water line to the machine, and there is no visible problem. I know water is coming through the pipe because the clothes washer is on the same one and it still works.

I was reminded that the first time the dishwasher stopped working it was mid-cycle. It had started but didn’t get very far (the soap door hadn’t opened yet but it had started to rinse).

We have very hard water. Is there a remote possibility that the line could have silted up, or am I just grasping at straws that would avoid having to find a technician? We used the machine almost daily.

Another thought was that we recently bought some new glasses from which some thin, flexible plastic/gel, coloured decoration washed off. I fear that this worked its way into something vital.

    Anyway, thanks for your suggestions!

I’ve checked on my tech info and there is no UK equivalent.

To check the supply to the machine, turn off the water, disconnect the fill hose and stick it in a bowl – turn water on and check for flow.

The “hum” may be one of two things – the electrical activation of the water valve, or the recirculation pump running empty. If you have water to the machine, the water inlet valve would be the bext thing to check.

Power off, you only need to perform a resistance check on the valve itself.
