Hi Guys, i ended up in casualty as i managed yesterday to set myself on fire 😯 im still in disbelief today i use motor cleaner in a can normally when i get a real mucky motor i had ran out so i used a tin of dust it the type you get for cleaning computer keyboards its a well known brand anyway i started to spray onto the motor and gave it a good blast about 3-4 seconds to clear off the carbon dust when the next thing i can rember was being ingulfed in flames and running for my life towards the customers front door! the whole underneith of the washer took alight, luckly my face is only mild burns but left hand moderatly at got off lightly considering, the reason for my post obviously somethings set it alright but what? the machine was unplugged and i test with a safety stick at lead into machine on every job to make sure iv unplugged the correct plug and afterwards double checked this and it is unplugged, any ideas?

im sorry for your distress simon and wish you a speedy recovery but i have to say it, that did make me laugh, i think it was the picture in my head of you sprinting towards the front door, on a serious note though years ago when i was just starting out it was my job to clean the hoover armatures before reconning motors, the chief engineer decided he was going to put some of it in an old sloping front and ignite it with the aid of a long mains cable with the live and neutral exposed. after he flicked the switch and we heard the bang we all ventured outside to see a round washing machine with the door 100 yards down the road. ( had to be carefull when writing this as i didnt want to include any words that big brother might consider to be anti-establishment if ya know what i mean) oh and by the way dont try this at home.

Hope you get better soon with no lasting effects.
The static explination is the right one as a local garage to me burned down a couple of years ago when a car on a post lift was having its fuel tank drained into a container that was on the floor and it just exploded this was due to static build up.
all the best for a speedy recovery Richard.June 18, 2008 at 7:10 pm #255215gegsy

Nasty! Hope your burns are not deep mate. Had a timer go up in flames many years ago after using a solvent, generally never use it indoors now.
It is handy for cleaning motors all bonnie but would always take em outside now.. and spray at arms length! 😯

Sorry to hear of your bad day Simon but I must thank you for the warning, As I was going to buy some canned air just for that purpose getting fed up with carbon dust up my nose when I try to blow it out. I suppose ironically that if you had left the plug in but switched off the static would have discharged to earth.
