ParticipantI have had at least 3 cases recently of late model servis machines failing due to burnt modules. Dont have model numbers to hand, but this seems to apply to machines with the module at the the bottom of the machine, and those with the module at the top. The burning is always at one corner of the board where a multiway connecter is situated, and the connecter block is usually burned partly as well as the board. there is usually track damage as well. Has anyone else seen this, and is this caused by module failure or some external cause?

had this fault on many occasions to me is seem like the full power of the machine is going through the connectors and the pcb. when i repair these i joint the cables together off the board so the power bypasses connections
another case of bad design

Many thanks for replies.
Electrofix, could you possibly give more specific details of your suggested modification please, for instance how many wires are involved? Thanks in advance. Got another one tomorrow wiyh the same symptoms….June 26, 2008 at 11:21 pm #255926Penguin45

Chop the plug off and fit proper AMP tags is what he’s saying – and don’t use those horrible red and blue plastic jobbies. Fine for 12vDC applications, rubbish in washers – vibration properties are bad.

Thanks again for replies. The one I went to today had the same problem.
I replaced the plug with seperate connectors, and also resoldered several tags, and we had lift-off!July 1, 2008 at 8:52 am #255928Seamy

Any recommendation for AMP connectors, part num’s etc, i find a lot of the red & blue ones failing also.

i use a nickel plated steel amp tag with a special crimp tool that rolls the steel over
this type of crimp was sold to me for electric cookers and gives a very secure tight fit on the connector. it is a bare connector that will need a plastic sleeve if you need insulation both crimps and tool made by utilux i get my supplies from empire cookers in manchester
@ neptune
the mod only involves about 4 wires if you look at the pcb you will see some of the tag join together on the print side of the board . these wires normally are the heavy wires that supply high currents so to keep the high current from going into the board and back out again leading to overhating and burn out join these wires off the board and make 1 wire connection to one of the connectors on the board
hope this helps
