    i have never changed a gearbox on one of these before, what is the best way to do it?

    Yikes, I cannot believe anyone would pay for a gearbox job on an old twin tub. Gearbox £98.00 ex vat. 😯

    My method was as follows, remove back panel, and also remove the four screws holding the lower back panel to the wrap round cabinet, release the earth lead top left from cabinet and the small cable clamp screwed a little lower down.

    Remove the spin drive clutch assy and remove the spin drum then pull the spin bellows seal upwards, off the shaft/bearing assy but leave it attached to the outer spin drum.

    Disconnect the sump hose, heater wiring and thermostats etc from the outer wash tub.

    Spread the cabinet and free the top surround, you can then lay the top surround backwards onto the floor. Note some later machines had a small plastic ‘rokut’ rivet through the top surround along the front edge, pull this out first.

    Remove the tripod and seal, undo the plastic post nut and lift off the wash drum.

    You then have access to the gearbox, three bolts plus the pump mounting bolt and the plastic timer drive cable ( just pull off the securing clip and the cable end will come out) and the gearbox is then free.

    Refitting is the reverse, make sure to line up the timer drive cable correctly and refit the clip, make sure the cable does not foul on the large gearbox drive pulley by slotting it through the hole in the gearbox sump or use a cable tie, don’t forget to swap the rubber seals from the old gearbox post.

    Also a good idea not to tighten up the post nut fully until you have aligned the outer tub. Put the tripod back on, refit the gyrator and move the drum until it is central before fully tightening the post nut.

    You really need a new or very good condition tripod kit as well.

    Some people used to remove the cabinet completely but I never did.

    No doubt one or two other old codgers will have variations on this theme, its at least ten years since I did one. 😥

    Jim is correct,if you don’t have a new tripod and seal kit you are IMO wasting your time.

    Just for the record, bec-components.co.uk still show a tripod kit in stock. Part number 149090 @ £21.08. 😉
    They had a few of these earlier this year – if they have still got them it would be interesting to know how they get them. Can you repost if they have?
    Alternatively, they may not have updated their website. 😕

    I have a new tripod kit from BEC its a pattern spare it doesnt look great as the tripod has no ceramic counterface it is just shine steel, the seal and nut looks ok.
    i have used one before and it worked ok.
    the gearbox i have is brand new but i only paid £50 for it, i have never done one in the past because of the cost of the part but i am doing this one as a favour for an old customer who has no room in her kitchen for an automatic and the water pressure is terrible.
    i dont fancy fixing it at all it seems like an awful lot of work.

    Less than 45 minutes, after you have done the first 10 or so. 😉

    Seriously though not that difficult, spin drum out, back off, wires and hoses off, spread cabinet to release top surround and outer spin drum complete, lay it back, drum off, three bolts and gearbox is off.

    Just think how grateful they will be. 🙂

    i changed that gearbox it took me 1 hour mainly as i had to keep reading the instructions.
    it works great the customer was delighted a much more satisfying job than sticking a pcb in a widl.

    Excellent, I’m sure you gained a great deal of satisfaction from the gratitude the customer almost certainly expressed. Result. :tup:

    1 hour for a first attempt is good going indeed., you must have had a good tutor. 😀

    Now if you really want to get your teeth into a proper job find an old Hotpoint Empress with the separate BTH motor, 071120 post nut and 081475 gearbox, a real gearbox. mind you the last one of those was made in the late 1950’s 😯 Ahh, it seems like only yesterday. 😥
