our 9 year old Indesit WDG1295 W whilst in use yesterday tripped out the electricity and I went to look at it and there was smoke coming out of the back.

I have opened up the back but nothing appears to be visibly wrong. It appears to be still working but we have not set it on a wash programme yet.

is this a known repairable fault? We like many are very skint at the moment so any advice would be gratefully received.

Most likely culprit is the motor but there is also a circuit board mounted low down at the back. With the plug out, take the lid and back panel off and first check for chaffed wires. Unscrew the circuit board and take it out of it’s box to inspect for damage. If that looks OK, tip machine up at an angle so you can see the back half of the motor. Take a look at the copper strips of the commutator whilst slowly turning the motor by pulling on the belt. You will probably find a couple of strips that look burnt. If you do find such damage you almost certainly need a new motor.

    Thanks for the response.

the circuit board looks OK but the copper in the commutator doesn’t look so much as burnt but a lot of them do look a darkened grey colour.

If it is the motor what would the replacement and/or labour costs approx?

Motor likely to be around the £80 mark – plus the VAT. Engineer rates vary widely around the country, so you should check at the time of making the appointment to avoid surprises.

thanks for the advice so far….

but, after trying to see if the motor was working as the copper did not appear to be burnt, I put the machine on the 17 delicate spin mode and the drum span fine.

I then put it on No. 4 wash mode where, after a couple of minutes (as the water would be heating I presume) the smoke appeared again. After turning everything off and removing the back found that the smoke had been coming from the wiring from the inside top left. At the socket where the electric enters the machine on the inside of this the brown (live) wire has a small plug going into the socket which is melted and burnt.

Anyone help please with the cause and solution?

Ah, that’s good news! The cable coming into the machine should go initially to a cylindrical component, the mains suppressor/filter. Sometimes these just have spade terminals for input and output but some machines have other arrangements. Sometimes you are meant to change the whole assembly including mains cable but I normally just fit a universal type suppressor, cut off any burnt sections of wire and fit new spade terminals as required. As before, plug out first :plug:

    Hi

I’d just give it a slap and tell it that it was too young to smoke and send it to bed without supper.

    Cheers Phidom, makes sense,

So I need new Universal Suppressor, which I can buy off this site, but is is it easy to get a hold of those spade terminals? I’m not sure whether I need them with the plastic clip attached as the old (melted) one.

I have opened up the plastic casing for the electric where the cable terminals are junctioned into the machine, they seem well melted, what is this called – to help locate replacement?

If it is a broken Universal Suppressor could this have caused further damage to the live cable running into the electrical motor that sits on TOP of the drum, as the wiring terminals look a bit charred there as well.

again thanks for your help, sorry for any inconvenience!
