Why is it that people have this burning desire to have features on machines that they don’t need or will likely ever use?

One tonight reminded me of it, digital temperature displays on a fridge or freezer… why? What possible reason do people need this for and why would you ever look at it? Butter is hard, fridge okay. Butter is soft, fridge busted. You don’t need a digital display to tell you that the milk is warm and the butter is soft. And, if the tomatoes are lie cannonballs it’s too cold. It’s not rocket science.

My favourite is a fast dishwasher wash program. Why does it need to be fast? You should have a few hours off before you eat again anyway so where’s the harm in a two hour wash cycle? Unless of course you have an eating disorder in which case I’d suggest that the long time taken to wash the dishes is probably a positive thing.

But the all time No1 has to be a washing machine with any more than half a dozen or so programs. They all want delicates, wool, sport as well as all the extra buttons and flashing lights and goodness knows what all then they… use only two, with no options!

I’m sure you lot have your own pet hates on features as well.

I don’t suppose all that many purchasers are looking for these extra features, in fact there are plenty who want something basic and easy to operate. I remember way back in 1967 when my parents moved to their first place with no gas and we had to get an electric cooker. They wanted one without a clock / timer but there were no such cookers available at the time. Some people buy something with lots of buttons and gizmos in the misguided impression that if it’s “top of the range” it will be better quality.

I would agree Phidom, the comments i get from customers tend to be that they wish they could buy a washing machine etc with fewer buttons & lights .. bit like the lovely Indesit Moon.. 😯

Wouldnt recommend that bag of bolts obviously but market research must have convinced Merloni there was a demand for it.
The simple facia probably gives the impression its gonna be reliable.. IRONY!! :rotfl:

In the late eighties, Servis, the good old English manufacturer, not that mob now, introduced a variant on the Quartz where the customer chose the temp, wash type, spin and the machine did the rest. A total flop as everyone wanted 520 programmes, and loads of buttons. But in saying that the Quartz was a doddle and sold well and was mostly reliable once they sorted the bearing seal in 1984.and the spincare tub, and the noisy GEC motors and the door seal and ………
But I’ve just reired mine after 18 years without a repair except the facia when it fell down stairs.
    If only….
