Hello,
I was kindly (I think!) donated a Hotpoint RFA60. After leaving it to stand and giving it a good clean, I plugged it in and opened its door. There was a blue sparking/flash from the light switch area, blowing the house fusebox. Bulb was blown, replaced that but it and the outer display indicator lights are still not working. The fridge part is not chilling, although the freezer part is happily freezing away.
I also noticed on the back wall inside the fridge a diagonal crack in the plastic. I do not know if this was here before and the fridge has always worked, or if damage has happened in transit. Would a crack let the gas escape? Or is that only punctures? Is the cooling system split into two seperately for both the fridge and freezer or do they both run off one system together?
Does anybody know what has happened and why? And more importantly, can I fix it? Might it ‘simply’ be a busted circuit board – and are these expensive.
How can I fix this please – can anyone help??

It has happened before that when the light bulb fails it then takes the PCB out.In my opinion if the bulb fails then it should not cause the light assembly to blow the board.But Hotpoints acountants have designed it to be that way.
The crack on the back wall sounds like a stress fracture which should not have happened either.This is a manufacturing defect which hotpoint would have to replace the fridge freezer.
Check with your friend to see if they registered the fridge freezer,if they did then book a call with hotpoint under their 5yr parts warranty.

So the stress fracture is a seperate issue..? and hopefully isolated? If it does not affect the refrigeration then I am not bothered about it – dare I ask how much a new pcb board might be? And IYO, would a straight swap of the parts fix the problem.. or is it possible that there was another underlying problem causing the surge.

the list price for the board is £69 plus vat!, hotpoints charge is £99 including parts if under 5 years old, however they will not give you a new machine, you may get a slight reduction in the price for the split but not alot!

Surely, if it’s a manufacturing fault and you’re paying labour then they’d have to offer an equivelent replacement if a repair cannot be achieved.
