ParticipantPenguin45 kindly suggested the 3-way valve might be faulty so I fitted a new one to find that it has not resolved the problem.
We now have a full handle on what happens: the machine is set to a 40 degree cottons program. It fills, heats, does its wash cycle, pumps out, spins, then fills again and does the first rinse. It then pumps out and a small amount of water is taken in to flush the conditioner in – but then it hangs everytime at this point, failing to take in more water for the second rinse and with the start/pause and pre-rinse lights both flashing continuously and C1 in the display window. If you press the start/pause button the machine resumes, taking in water for the second rinse, rinsing, then pumping out. At this point it again hangs with the same display effects as before. If you again press start/pause it resumes, filling and rinsing for the third and final time and then carrying on through the pump out and spin cycle to completion.
My earlier thoughts that the problem might have been related to the drawing of water elsewhere in the house was erroneous.
Is some sort of re-set function necessary once the cause of a fault has been rectified, I wonder or does this point to there being a further/different problem somewhere?
Any suggestions gratefully received.
TIA.

Machines normally do at least 3 rinses and the conditioner is taken in at the final rinse. The instruction book may give details of the programmes i.e. how many rinses. It’s a pity you were not able to test the original valve with a multimeter. In cases like this I have sometimes tried adding water through the soap drawer using a watering can, to see if the machine starts up again given a certain level of water in the drum.

Thanks for help and guidance so far.
This morning I cleared the fault log and ‘reactivated’ the machine and set it going – only to find it still hangs at the point of rinse fill.
The manual suggests that after a C1 fault code one should check the water inlet, the water valve, the ‘screen’ and the pressure sensor.
Am I correct in assuming that the ‘screen’ is the filter in the inlet manifold?
The manual says ‘check’ the pressure sensor but doesn’t say how. it also shows an adjustment screw on the top of the sensor. If someone could shed light on what I ‘check’, I’ll be eternally grateful.
TIA.

Participanti think by pressure sensor, they actually mean the analogic switch
i must admit, it does sound like its faulty, ive never sucessfully adjusted one

All –
Thanks for help thus far.
Both pressure sensors on order. Before I did so I removed the rubber tubes from the bottom of both sensors and blew hard down each, hoping that this simple act would clear them if there was a blockage preventing the sensors from operating properly. It’s almost needless to say that this failed to resolve the problem…
Will post again when I have fitted the new sensors.

Changed both sensors this afternoon – analogic and 2-level fill sensor – to find the C1 problem remains. The machine still hangs part way through the fill stage at each rinse.
Is there anything else I can try? Is the fact that I’ve now changed the 3-way water valve and both sensors to no effect pointing to a more fundamental problem such as one with the mainboard? Is it possible the program is somehow corrupt and needs re-loading?
I am getting near to the end of my tether with this AEG which is in every other respect excellent.
Does it look as if I need to get an AEG person out to take a look?
Any advice gratefully received.
TIA.
