My Hoover Quattro washing machine isn’t spinning and is making funny noises when the drum turns.

Have been looking at new ones and wondered if this one was any good LG F1222TD

My other alternative is a Bosch Excel machine with a 7kg load and a 1200 spin.

I would appreciate any comments or advice.

    Thanks

    LG, no.

Long wash times, bearing problems and not good spares support along with a few other foibles.

The Bosch will probably be okay. Most of the trade do think they’re okay in general.

Is there a specific reason you need a 7Kg load or more? You may want to have a read of this article before you go down that path as it’s not the nirvana many people think it is or without, as usual, a compromise.

Thanks for the advice, I thought it would be useful to have a larger drum so I could easily wash duvets, at the moment a single one is fine but double or kingsize aren’t.

I don’t really want to spend more than £400 but would like the best quality machine that I can get for that price. Not too bothered about lots of programs.

I have looked for a hot and cold fill but having trouble finding any. Are they still available?

Re: Is this washing machine any good??

    Hi,

Have a read of this article, I know it’s lengthy but it could save you an expensive mistake.

All I’d say about washing duvets is that, just because you can get them in the washing machine doesn’t mean to say that they will be cleaned correctly. You need a lot of capacity to wash even a double duvet, I’d argue far more than most any domestic machine will offer. The best way to get them cleaned is to have them done professionally.

If you ask most of the guys on here they’ll tell you that most of the stuff under £400 isn’t that great no matter what camp they sit in or what they favour.

You may also want to have a read of why hot fill is a waste of time as, the way things stand, it mostly is for most people.

I’ve read both of the articles you gave the links for and see your point.

So if I was to go for a 1200 ish spin and a 6kg load with a cold fill, which machine would you recommend?

I am a little confused as the ISE washer has a 1600 spin speed, which according to the articles isn’t needed or indeed much better than a slower spin speed.

I must admit I am tempted to go for a machine that has a 3 or 5 year parts and labour warranty, as at least then I know I won’t have any expense during that time.

Re: Is this washing machine any good??

It really depends on what you want, how long you want it to last, how well you want it to perform, what you wash and how often.

When people ask me I try to be as unbiased as possible, it’s hard as I often know (like many people involved in appliances for a living) that what people actually need and what they ask for are all too often worlds apart. That’s not intended to be conceited or a sort of “we know better” statement by any stretch, it’s just that we’d much rather see you get something that is up to the task you have for it and that will do what you want.

Saying that all washing machines are the same is, to us, like saying that all cars are the same as they all do the same thing, get you from A to B. We all know that’s not true and there are huge differences in cars, the same applies to washing machines and almost any other appliance.

For example you wouldn’t expect a car salesperson or expert to advice you buy a Mazda MX5 as a family car. It comes down to what you need it to do to advise.

So really it depends on what you want and expect a washer to do. From there we can work back the way starting with the best option, which will likely exceed the budget, working back to find something that fits the best as possible.

If, for example, you are washing clothes for one person, light use, then it’s a totally different proposition to washing for a family of four or five. It’s like trying to compare the MX5 against a Zafira, totally different things for totally different purposes.

After all this and you have the information to make an informed choice, it’s up to you what you choose to spend your cash on.

So, if you tell us what you want it to do and how well you want it to perform we can help you a lot more.

kwatt, thanks for taking the time to give me advice. I need a washer for 3 peoples clothes, not heavily soiled, I probably do on average 10 loads a week. I generally use the 30 or 40 degree wash with extra rinses.

Having looked at the advice on here I’ve just noticed a very inexpensive one from John Lewis with a 3 year warranty which seems really good value. Would you see this was ok? http://www.johnlewis.com/230420541/Product.aspx

    Thanks again for your advice

It’ll probably be okay, probably have a sealed tank as well mind as it’s a Zanussi in a skirt so if anything gets stuck in the drum or bearings fail etc. then it’s a scrapper.

Sad, but it’s the way the industry has gone.

But for three people a 6kg load capacity is more than enough.

Do also bear in mind that that machine will take about 2 hours for a 40 wash. Quick washes are useless for anything other than the most lightly soiled clothing. The industry definition of “lightly soiled” is clothes worn once, not next to the skin which is pretty much not a lot. The quick washes, regardless of how you’re sold them, are next to useless for anything else.

Any clothing that comes into contact with skin is regarded as, at least, medium soiled. You have skin flakes, grease, urine and a host of other nasty things to get out. If you don’t do it right then they don’t come out and you can get, as below, skin irritations and degradation of the items.

Low temperature washes and quick washes are also ill advised (bad actually) for towelling and bedding, both of which are classed as always being “heavily soiled”. Everyone does or should be doing heavy soiled washes, they often just don’t know it. 😉

Any clothing worn for sports or gym are classed as being heavily soiled regardless of what dirt you can see as there’s an awful lot you cant see. You’ll see it over time though as they “grey” etc.

Not doing these items correctly can lead to skin irritation and greying or discoloration of the items, which is not good.

It’s a lot more complex than people think I’m afraid.

Re: Is this washing machine any good?? Bosch WAE24363GB

Thanks very much for the advice, but having measured the space I have this machine is too deep.

Am now considering this machine Bosch WAE24363GB. Some honest advice about its reliability would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

I decided on buying my last house quicker than what you’re taking over which washing machine to get. 🙂

    Just go for it.

Incindentally, so did I. But that was before I worked in research. Now I can’t buy anything without looking at all the options. Drives my husband mad.

Would still like to know if the Bosch is a decent machine though 😀
