Our dryer has just stopped working.

The power is on and the display works but the drum doesn’t turn and I can hear something click on and off when I press the start button.

I removed the fan housing on the back and had a look and the heater and motor look OK externally.

Removing the top cover I can turn the drum without any problems and the belt which goes round the drum looks OK and I can see the motor turning.

I tried setting the machine to the “no heat” setting, switching on and giving the drum a spin in the clockwise direction. The drum rotates slowly for a few revolutions as though it is trying to work and then comes to a halt .

Everything sounds OK when the drum is rotated ( no screeching bearings, rattles etc) – even though the machine has routinely had noisy bearings from almost new.

There was an “electric” smell when it stopped working but I can’t see anything burnt out. The circuit board at the top front right of the machine looks OK as do the wires around it.

The only sign of heat damage is a very slight scorching round the top rear right vents i.e. left looking at machine from front but I can’t see anything inside.

    Any thoughts ?

    Thanks

it sounds like a capacitor problem to me .
    plug out before checking.

    Thanks

Does anyone know how to get access to the motor ( I assume the capacitor is mounted somewhere close to it).

I’ve had a look round and although I can get to each end of the drive shaft, I can’t even see the motor itself. Do I need to go in from the top and take the drum out to get to it ?
