ParticipantWe brought our 220/240v dryer from the US with us to the UK. Whirlpool WED8300SWD
I want to know how to wire the 60hz twin supply appliance to the 50hz UK three wire supply safely as I know the US supply is +120 / -120 to get 240v instead of straight 240 here.
We had UK purchased similar appliances here before so it must be possible!!??
Thanks

Never heard of it done before, US is 120v, so you need some kind of transformer i would guess, anyone else seen it done???

Dryers are 240v supplied in USA; the appliance is rated 240v.
We have previously had them in UK; I guess Whirlpool wire the motor differently (there are 2 live/hot wires to get 240v in US instead of 1 here in UK)

The motor runs on 120 volts and relies on the middle neutral wire + 1 of the hot legs on the 240 breaker.
Using straight 240 will burn up the motor.July 9, 2008 at 10:15 am #257231jon06

Using straight 240 will burn up the motor. How do you think Whirlpool supply them in UK; is it the case they fit a different motor then rather than internally wire differently?
The appliance rating plate shows 120/240v

Whirlpool do not supply this model in the UK. Uk models will be wired differently and do have 230v motors fitted.
I have however worked on quite a few of the US versions which are in the UK which used to be supplied to US forces and embassy personnel and all of these had a large external transformer so that they could work.

Thanks, we are near a US airbase, I will try to find out what I can. They must take UK 240 and split down to 2×120 somehow via the transformer.July 9, 2008 at 5:37 pm #257234SublimeMasterJW
ParticipantJohnnyMac Do you know where a person could get such a transformer and the wiring directions?

I have not seen any available in the UK, these transformers were brought in specially by the yanks.

Interesting; however I would need 220/240v input with 220/240v output but the output converted to US ‘style’ 2x110v from the UK input.

‘fraid not; this takes UK 220/240v and steps it down to 110v for using with 110v tools mainly on construction sites etc.
Thanks

ParticipantProbably this large transformer has 2 hot legs and a neutral that connects to the electrical block where the pigtail would be mounted most likely.
I have never seen one but I can imagine that is how it works.Just a guessJuly 9, 2008 at 8:31 pm #257241jon06
ParticipantRe: Whirlpool Dryer from USA
Correct; I used to have one for my 110v site tools; which incidentally, worked fine when I moved to Florida from UK…..just had to fit a US plug!!
