Strange one this, called last week.

Hotpoint CTD00 condensor dryer, about six months old. It is in a beauty parlour therefore the Indesit Company will not attend under warranty.

Initial complaint was that no water was being pumped up into the water container.

Today I fitted a new pump,& filter housing including float.

The original polystyrene float has hardened and shrivelled up to less than a third of its original size. 😯

The float has a sweet smell and if you squeeze it and then rub your fingers together it feels oily.

I can only assume that the essential oils and other gunk used in the massage treatments are not being fully washed from the towels on a 40° wash, the residue must then be distilled by the dryer and have caused some kind of chemical reaction in the polystyrene float. I have never seen anything like this before.

The float should virtually fill the space between the two sidewalls it is mounted between.

I have advised the customer to try using green box Ariel on a 60° wash to see if that will alleviate the problem.

I think this has been mentioned on here before but 10 pin bowling places also have problems with chemicals attacking appliances. The polish they use to lubricate the bowling alleys reacts with the washer door seals which swell up and stretch out of shape.

I get loads of door seal problems, usually when someone in the family has serious skin problems. The creams used attack the door seals in no time at all. I had one that had a new seal every two to three months until they started overnight soaking and boil washing the offending clothes.

Never seen anything like this though.

We used to get loads of them in the summer and the reason for it was low temp washes and suntan lotion according to the manufacturer…

Does your shrivelled doofer still float?

Just tried it in the sink. It does float, just about, but has nothing like the bouyancy of the new one.

Hotpoint did special gaskets many years ago, EPDM or butyl rubber, we used to call them ‘chip shop seals’ very expensive though.

It really is amazing just how much it has shrunk, glad I’m not into massages. 😉 😥
