A few days ago, I noticed that my dishwasher was making more noise than normal – a kind of whine with vibrato at most times during the programme.

It was due for a clean anyway, so I tried that just in case. The pitch of the whine is now lower but it is still very much there.

Is this noise to be expected or is it a sign that something is wrong? Is the problem something I can possibly fix myself, a problem to get someone out to or a sign that the machine is about to fail and is beyond economic repair?

It might actually, believe it or not, be the detergent you are using.

Do not use tablets or those Fairy pouches: they over-foam far too much for small table-top machines, and they are designed for full-size machines.

Use a powder detergent, or a liquid detergent such as ‘Finish’ Liquid/Gel, or ‘Sun’ powder or liquid, if you can find it. Don’t overfill the little detergent dispenser.

I recently tried Finish Liquid again, after years of trying tablets in my full-size Bosch. I did notice a faint whistling whine at certain stages of the wash cycle.

I have only used those in early washes, because some came with it.

    I use a liquid – Carrefour’s, as it happens.

The noise is now worse than it used to be… quite a “grind” to it, and happening at various points in the wash. I’ve had this machine from new and am used to the noise it makes – but these are extra, unusual noises.

“Fairy Bursts” is a low froth product. However, like all pre-dosed products, it is designed for full sized, 12 setting machines and is not appropriate for a table top model.

These baby models should only be dosed with a powder product, suitably reduced to suit the appliance – for a table top machine, this is probably 1/3rd of the stated dose on the box.

Try this with the machine and see if the noise disappears. If it does, the pump noise was caused by cavitation. If it doesn’t, it will be worth getting the circulation pump checked for leaks – this can cause bearing whine.

It appears that the machine has failed to drain properly after its last use.

It recovered after the failing to drain, and ran at least one more wash. However, it is no longer moving any water.

Is it worth repairing? If not, I suppose I will have to get its nearest equivalent.

The only regular problem I come across with these is the impellor on the circulation motor disintegrating. It all whirs away, but nothing much happens. Impellor is cheap enough (065550 – £12 last time I checked) – the hardest part of the job is finding all the screws to get the wrap-over casing off to allow you access – there are hoardes of them. The motor itself is just over £100, so if has been weeping water and has now seized the cost effectiveness of the repair is debatable.

Power off if you intend to investigate this yourself.

I have come to the conclusion without removing anything that the motor may have seized, but reading about this and similar models, it is always possible of course that the impellor has failed as Penguin45 suggested.

If the motor is running and the impellor has failed, should I be able to tell from outside the case? If not, I am prepared to strip the machine at my leisure but it will have to take second place to the washer-dryer investigation.

I have the same dishwasher, i get this whinning noise when i have used finish tablets in the past, upon opening the door there is tonnes of foam but little water circulation going on.

I have since started using the cheap pound shop tablets, work perfectly there small enough to fit in the dispenser and no foaming, cleans very well.

I also use salt and rinse aid in my dishwasher.

I only paid £70 for my machine if it fails ill just buy a brand new one.

    Consider………

Dishwasher tablets are all designed for use in full sized, 12 place setting machines. You are therefore overdosing your machine by at least a factor of three every time you use it.

Just by powder and adjust the dose accordingly.

Penguin 45, is this true even for the cheap cheap tablets that are tiny and they clearly dont put as much detergent in them, my mum gave me them cos she said they didnt wash properly in her full size dishwasher and my dad says its because they are too small.

I weight them out and there is little more in them than the ammount of powder I would put in anyway, i guess because they are cheap they use the least detergent!

If it works for you and your crockery is coming out clean, carry on. It does possibly make some sort of statement about the detergent though 😀 .

I guess though in a smaller machine these small tablets work ok in the ammount of water they wash in.

I was also told by an engineer that cheap detergents dont contain the lubricants that help lubricate the seal of the wash pump impeller?

    Is this true?
