Today our 7 year old Bosch washing machine finished its washing cycle, however unusually the washing came out slightly wetter than usual.
When attempting to start a new load it was completely dead ie no lights nothing. Ive checked the plug, changed the fuse in the plug and the tumble drier works okay off this plug so its the appliance.
It gets heavily used (family of six) and about 3 years ago I changed the brushes. I cant remember if worn brushes previously resulted in no power. There has been no problem with it spinning, draining etc and the filter is clear.
Access to the motor is from underneath and hence a right pain. Could it be the brushes again and do they reach a point when worn that the machine just goes dead?
I can do brushes but any further electrical work for me is a no no.
Also for a machine that cost about £300, would 7 years be a good life dependency bearing in mind its used between 2 and 5 times a day!!. I need to balance the cost of a call out against buying a new machine etc.
Any help would be appreciated.

10 years ago, 7 years always used to be the expected life with “family use”. 4 years from the first set of brushes, 3 years from the second – motor efficiency drops as it gets older; were this to be just brushes, the next set may last only a couple of years.
However…… The board should still power up and programme. If it doesn’t, it has almost certainly failed. The overload from the brushes failing can do it, as can the door lock going bang with age. Remove fascia panel and unclip board – any damage will be pretty obvious.
If it has failed, the pcb is likely to be £120-160, plus whatever actually caused the failure. Debatable whether or not the repair is cost effective.

Thanks for your prompt reply, particulary in relation to the fact that the board should still power up (and doesnt)and a replacement board could be costly. On balance I think a replacement is due.

Just as a follow up : I opened the machine up. The brushes still had plenty of life in them so clearly the problem was elsewhere so possibly the board as you suggested.
In view of the age, its hard life and the cost of repair I binned it and got a new basic Bosch from comet for £280. Appears to be similar to the one I dumped although smaller drum. I doubt it was made in Germany but if I can 7 years out of this one I will be happy.
Would love to have afforded a Miele but hey ho!blame the credit crunch 😉
