I use £1 shop tablets in my bosch tabletop dishwasher, they fit in the dispenser fine, they do not overfoam and they was perfectly, i use them combined with separate rinse aid and salt despite the packaging saying they already contain it.

So i know i have got good wash perforamance and NO overdosing/overfoaming whatsoever however I have been told by engineers that the cheap detergents dont contain lubricants that lubricate the wash pump shaft seal? He says only products like finish contain this pump lubricant and using the cheaper detergents I am asking for the seal to desintigrate?

is this true, I thought i was getting a good deal £1 for 20 tablets but now I am wondering if what he has said is true, I dont want it wearing out!

As I say the cheapy tablets I got wash perfectly better than when i was using finish powder. Even on sunday roast pots and pans they wash really well as long as i rinsh the heavy soiled pots first otherwise I find the filter clogs up with things like burnt on food matter!

    Kind regards
    Rich

    Re: Cheapy dishwasher tablets

If it works for you, Richard, that’s fine. Consider…….

1/ There is no such thing as pump or pump seal lubricant. Period.
2/ The saline water circuit only enters the water softener unit. The water never actually enters the machine, so putting the salt in the detergent, where it is only circulated outside the softener system is utterly pointless.
3/ Rinsing heavy deposits off the crockery prior to washing is essential for the good performance of any dishwasher. It’s a dishwasher, not a waste disposal unit.
4/ Continued use of “full sized” tablets will probably lead to an accumulation of detergent in the lower parts of the machine where there may not be circulation. This can choke the sump, water level system, drain pump pipework, the drain hose or even the sink coupling itself. It will, eventually, bite you on the bottom.

I meant that I use salt in the water softener compartment not in the detergent area.

I just meant that although the tablets i have contain salt and rinse aid i still use them separatly as well!

    Re: Cheapy dishwasher tablets

There seems to be a popular misconception that multifunction dishwasher tablets contain salt: they don’t.

What they do have, is a process of softening water by (apparently), polymers. This is known as “salt function”.

As for lubrication of seals, detergents by their very nature, make water slippery, and thus reduce the friction between surfaces. Food soils such as fats and oils, will also provide a degree of lubrication.

What the ‘engineers’ you spoke to might mean, is lack of corrosion inhibitors. The most common one is benzotriazole, which is used to provide protection to machine metallic parts, as well as cutlery. Certainly, most supermarket own-brands will have it included. The Co-Op used to have a list of all ingredients on their boxes, and I’m certain it was listed upon the box.

I’m also pretty certain that Ecover DOESN’T include it, as it is petroleum-based, manufactured chemical.

    Re: Cheapy dishwasher tablets

Hey thought i would ask my questions here instead of starting a new thread, i was wondering im using fairy active bursts in our zanussi tabletop dishwasher, one of the 6 place setting ones, is ok?, i havent had any issues with them also i have been using finish salt, is there any difference between that and other brands e.g. tesco, wilkinsons and ive been using the finish turbo dry rinse aid and the fairy active drying one, everything comes out dry but i was wondering if normal finish rinse aid is just as good and drys everything

    cheers

i have been using them in it for a couple of months and havent had any problems, i was just wondering if they could cause any issues that might be not noticeable

    Re: Cheapy dishwasher tablets

A table top dishwasher needs one third of the detergent required for a full sized appliance. Any “pre-packed” detergent is aimed at full sized machines, therefore Bursts, whilst an excellent and effective detergent, is too much for your machine.

The only reliable way to dose the machine is to buy a powder product and reduce the stated dosage to about 1/3rd.

Thanks Penguin45, also is there any difference between the different makes of salt out there, is finish the best to use? and with rinse aids what is the best ?

All salt is NaCl – just make sure you buy the coarse grain stuff.

MrsP uses Finish rinse-aid in our machine with good results.

    Re: Cheapy dishwasher tablets

Thanks penguin for that it cleared up the questions i had been pondering. Well there is one more i had been pondering, this is the last one i promise lol, is it possible to have a full size dishwasher plumbed in so it is portable, what i had been thinking was some appliance rollers on the bottom, drain hose over the sink, the water inlet was puzzling me but i remeber my nan saying that there used to be adaptors for front loaders before they were plumbed in to connect them to a kitchen tap? is this possible with a modern dishwasher, any advice/comments/experience would be greatly appreciaed

    Re: Cheapy dishwasher tablets

Tap adapters were, are and probably always will be, trouble. *Waits for lots of older engineers to join in…..* Very difficult to make seal properly and have a bad habit of detaching themselves, leading to lots of water wasted.

Appliance rollers are not particularly stable and have poor cornering abilities (not unlike Ferrari! 😀 ). A frame with castors might work better, but it would be a make it yourself job.

    Re: Cheapy dishwasher tablets

lol thanks for that advice penguin, if anyone else has any advice it would be greatly appreciated to. I thought they might be problamatic, it was just an idea i was considering as i thought if the tabletop dishwasher we have ever broke down we would get a fullsize or slimline one, permanent plumbing isnt impossible in our kitchen you guys did give me some advice and i got some from diynot but it would be awkward and cost more money. I had my doubts about the appliance rollers too they seem to be for where the appliance only needs to be pulled out of the recess/counter it is in/under and not for cornering, lol. I could probably knock up a frame with castors if needed. I have been doing some googling and saw America has portable dishwashers and tried to see if there are any of the quick connector/coupling systems available in the uk but it doesnt seem so.
