ParticipantLast week I replaced a broken Candy frost-free model (the N1B and its seemingly endemic freezing fridge compartment) with an Indesit BAN12. Again, a frost free model, but this time of the design which circulates air in the fridge too.
Anyway, it’s annoyingly loud when the compressor and fan kick in. I sit about eight feet away from it, and can hear it even with the kitchen door shut – it’s a low, irritating drone. An Indesit engineer has decreed it to normal, perhaps even quieter than usual, so there’s no hope there.
Fortunately the shop I bought it from has agreed to swap it for something else, but now I’m worried that I’ll pick something just as noisy, or worse – even noisier. Until last week it hadn’t even occurred to me that noise would be an issue!
I’m thinking that avoiding frost-free would be a good start, as that takes the fan out of the picture. What I’d like to know is which models are the quietest, either by design or reputation?
Cheers!

Are all their models very quiet then? I’ve picked out this one as being the most suitable:

The only thing that worries me is that the shop I’m stuck with might not be able to get hold of Liebherr stock. What else should I consider as a plan B?

Don’s the best man to advise you, he may pick up on this and give you a better answer than I can.
Liebherr are about the best you can buy ATM.

Plan B would be Miele. Made by Liebherr and re badged with slightly different interior cosmetics.

It would be interesting to know if a Liebherr is any quieter than other brands? I’m sure that quality plays a part in reducing the noise factor but I’m not convinced there’s any guarantee? They don’t state noise levels in their spec IIRC? 😕
Could also be that in Tim L’s case the location is on a wooden floor between kitchen cabinets that act like a resonating acoustic guitar anyway. Liebherr (being German) would therefore sound like Beethoven’s Fifth Overture when its on a defrost cycle. 😈 (Only kidding but you catch my drift – don’t you? 🙂 )

I’ve found noise ratings in the specs on Comet’s site, and using some Google-Fu have worked out the quietest suitable model is this at 36db:
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/produc … L-ART477-4
However at £480 it’s a bit more than I was planning on spending (the model I’ll be swapping with cost £300).
Then there were a few at 38db, including the favourite so far:
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/produc … RR-CUP3021
I’m not sure how much I should trust these ratings though, as they also list the frost-free version of that Liebherr model as 38db, which seems fishy. They do list my current noisy fridge as 43db though, so on paper the non-frost-free Liebherr looks like a good bet.

It’s actually on a concrete floor. Part of the problem is that the kitchen door is of the traditional style with thin wooden panels, so doesn’t do a great job at cutting down noise. There’s not much I can do about that – the house is rented.

They’re also very good. 😉
On noise, have a read at this article as it may shed some light.

Heh – I did wonder how reliable those ratings were.
