ParticipantHi – thanks to this site I diagnosed and replaced thermostats in 2005 and often mention it as one of the better sites on the ‘net.
Three years later the Active light is on, drum turning but no Drying light, not even briefly, and no heat.
This time both thermostats are good (short circuit). I presume there is no point in warming them in water to test if they go open circuit when warm. I read about 60 ohms across the heater element – I would have expected less when cold but it certainly isn’t open circuit.
This didn’t started as an intermittent fault (unless my family are hiding things from me!). One day it worked…
Any ideas for next steps.
TIA

You presume correctly as water and electrical components don’t go together too well. 😉

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint drier – its not thermostat or element /
Thanks for identifying the 3rd stat – unfortunately that one is good too so looks like it is the ‘Dryness Module’
Found my receipt – Comet 5th November 2003 so just under the 5 years parts guarantee!
From Indesit’s website, “… Comet, are responsible for any servicing … under warranty” I presume this doesn’t apply to the parts guarantee and if I go this route, it would have to be via Indesit (its Sunday so can’t call to find out)
Reading the delays and hassle that can happen with Indesit’s customer service, can an independent repairer replace the module and reclaim the cost from Indesit?
The part may be free with Indesit service but the labour will still be £100
🙁 (for a 15 minute replacement plus driving time – assuming they agree with my diagnosis and bring a module with them)On a related note, at £100, I have to consider a new drier, especially if more energy efficient. Is there any way of finding out the Energy Efficiency rating of a TDC62S?
TIA

Hi, the retail cost of the module is over £90, so the £100 indesit way will be your cheapest option, also the comet part is only for the first year (unless you took an extended cover) so you can still use indesit,
the other point of reclaiming the cost of part under 5 years is a no go, you only get the part free if hotpoint/indesit fit it,October 5, 2008 at 9:42 pm #263777nkitson
ParticipantRe: TDC62S – its not thermostat – its the programme selector
I carried on a little further – read a posting about relay dry joints so after a few unsuccessful taps on the side panel I disconnected the dryness module for a look.
Joints all looked shiny and I reasoned that using a soldering iron to remake the relay joints would give Indesit reason to blame me so I put everything back together ready to call Indesit in the morning (note from below, I’m just within my 5 year parts guarantee). In the process I move the rotary programme switch from the automatic setting it has probably been on for at least a year.
Sure enough – one last check and it springs to life! Apart from not having changed the switch setting, I don’t think the dryer has been used for at least 4 months – washing has either been on the line or hanging indoors in a warm utility room so I guess a little oxidation had built up on a switch contact (I presume the switch has multiple contacts otherwise I would imagine the machine would have been completely dead).
Of course, it could have been one of the connectors I reseated whilst taking it apart but everything looked very clean.
Whatever it was, I’m glad I didn’t call in Indesit or buy a dryness module myself!
Hope this summary is of use to somebody in the future.
Nick
