ParticipantOK so I’ve mastered putting the huge 9 groove belt on one of these tin cans using the special tool (see other thread). But boy do I ever get some recalls on them usually ‘cos the drum has slipped off the nylon bearing pads.
Now I almost always replace the 4 nylon drum pads when attending a broken belt as more often than not they are worn through anyway! So new belt, 4 nylon pads and a squirt of oil on the rear shaft – job done!
But 4 out of 5 result in a recall sooner rather than later, yesterday I bearly got to my next call before the phone rang and I had to call back. :rolls:
Now as I see it the front panel fixing to the side panels is rubbish, screws top and bottom but nothing in the centre. The tin drum floats back and forth and eventually derails off those flippin’ pads.
Should I perhaps stuff a few shims or washers between the drum shaft and the bearing to force the drum further forward or what?
I’m VTD00peeed off with the darn things and no mistake! 👿

shaft kit now comes with rear seal and front pads, seems to stop it scraping so hopefully pushes it foward slightly

Kit also includes a thicker rear seal and an extra washer. A new inner drum is the only real way to stop the drum scraping on the back. When you have done all that the belt will ,like as not fail again within 12 months. 😥

I guess you refer then to the C00113038 Drum Shaft Kit? Ah, now that’s where I’ve been going wrong then? Just attempting to replace a broken belt is a pointless exercise then without also fitting a Drum Shaft Kit eh?
I usually just inspect the rear shaft and bearing hub from the back and squirt in a bit of oil if it seems intact. Whop in a set of pads and a belt, walk away, the drum falls in a big heap and I’m back there scratching my folickly challenged head every time…silly me.
OK I’ll up the price of the job in future another £15 -£20 and see where it gets me? 😆
Thanks again guys!

Have they changed the design of the drum then?

Quite some time ago, it has a slightly rounded profile along the back edge, same part number.
Most customers won’t pay for it though. 😥

I fit a few belts but always point out to the customer the “quality” of build and the “design improvement” of using a stretch belt. as such I wont gurantee the belt!
To be honest I usually find that a belt will with nornal use just about last 12 monthswilf

i have replaced losts of these belts on the hotpoint VTD range and the indesit equivelant and never had any probs. yes they had a few problems when range was first released but with the design changes a new belt is all that is needed when it breaks. 😀
cant see what you dudes are doing wrong 😕 😕

i was just trying to say as an ex hotpoint engineer and having seen this range from day 1 to the present and all the problems and “solutions” that i personally havent had any problems or recalls within 1 year to any t/d i have fitted a new belt too.
The shaft kit is a very good start though on the older models that havent the thicker shaft seal which does defo help push drum forward to help it stay on the front panel felt bearing.
sorry to imply that you dudes were going ott on the repairs but suppose if it helps you sleep better at night then so be it….each to his own. :salute:

Lets just face it these machines are the pits.I personally only change the belt and would only change shaft and pads if they were broke. There is just no stability to this machine because the metal side pannels are so thin theres stronger metal used for a Fray Bentos tin.Anyway your not going to get away with out being called back to it cos you Know the stats will proberley go again in a few weeks. As Penguin says If you start with crap and repair it you still have crap. :rolls:

Participantive changed very few stats on vtd machines
grazza has a point.. as you all know, im a comet engineer, and ive been repairing them from day one
there are fixes, and if you do it right, by fitting the kit and a belt, you rarely go back!he has a point

So………
Fit the shaft kit, the spacing washers, the fat back seal, the curved drum, the front support kit and the customers going to be happy are they? Indeed, at 2 or 3 years old, are they going to pay me? I think not…. With a 10 day lead time round here, they’re not going to wait either for the “All for £90” offer either.
*Sigh* Zanussi are really doing rather well out of this – the customers do tend to listen to what their repairer tells them.
I’m stuck for choice, really. Sooner or later we’ll have a mid-range ISE dryer and I’m going to sell them like shelling peas.
Chris.

spot on rolf, i agree these machines arent very good at all and believe me when they first arrived us hotpoint engineers were a bit peeed off at how flimsey and useless they really were. and it was fix kit after fix kit supplied by the technical guys trying to sort all the problems caused by the very thin cabinet that swayed from side to side, the lid being the part that really held it all together and sort of stable.
and cornwall dude you are just missing out on a bit of revenue because when all is said and done these are still repairable and with all the “fixes” they arent too bad at all to repair when done correctly.
the stats, well thats another story isnt it……. 😉 😉
