This machine gets through a set of brushes every 10 months. There is quite a bit of sparking but it doesn’t blow the trip. I can just about perceive a bit of roughness when I put my finger on the commutator.
Is it worth me looking into getting it skimmed? (New motor, connect £306 +vat.)
Anyone know a good place to get it done?

Not sure if very fine emery paper would bring it up. The gaps between the segments are critical too.
I’ve seen a glass fibre brush type jobby thing being used on a commercial motor by a rewind firm who were working in a factory where i happened to be also. It worked fantastic, guy could keep it held on motor armature while motor was turning, cleaned it like new.

Working on motor live NOT TO BE RECOMMENDED though 💡

Have you tried the old fashioned “comm stick” we used to use on vac motors? Connect sell them @ £5 ish.
    Bit cheaper…… 😉

Didn’t look to see what it was called. Everything was in french anyway so it would probably be Novotronique 🙂 .
I haven’t been able to find a pic of the motor so I’m not even sure about which one it is. (Only seen it from the brush end). Brushes fit into a plastic housing which also incorporates tacho coil and you unscrew four torx fixing screws to pull it off and fit new brushes without moving machine. They’re the brushes with red rubber bits round them.

Not sure about comm sticks, have heard they can make things worse.
If I can find a good engineer with a good lathe who hasn’t taken early retirement yet, I reckon it won’t cost much. Shouldn’t think it would take more than 20 mins. including setting up the lathe.

you dont usually need to skim the com unless badly worn or rewiring armature, com stick will bed in brushes for normal wear.
best to use hard com stick first ,used by (armature winders) if problem persists best to take to armature winders to test & skim.

What happens is that one brush wears down a lot quicker than the other. In fact, the second brush isn’t much shorter than new. Does this give any clue to the problem?

Are the brushes too lose in there guides this can cause them to arc or in this case just one maybe. you could have an intenal armature fault, need special equipment to test.
