I have a 2.5 year old Whirlpool AFG8080 freezer that has started clicking/ chattering and the temperature display flashing at intervals.

I have an extended warranty. After a visit by the engineer the insurers have decided to write off the freezer. They say it needs a new controller board and this plus the time makes it uneconomic. Not bad for 2.5 years old!! They want me to contribute towards the cost of a replacement – I can get it cheaper on-line without the insurance. The extended warranty is not worth the paper its printed on.

The freezer sits next to a matching fridge and as the freezer is no longer available I need to repair it otherwise the units will not match etc.

There are threads in the forum referring to American style fridge/freezers with a similar problem but without pictures of the boards I am not sure if the suggestions will work.

Has anyone had this problem on this or similar models and managed to fix the board?

I have looked at the board which is mounted behind the front display. In common with some other posts there is an orange relay that is chattering. I cannot see any burn spot damage or any ‘blown’ capacitors, although this does not mean they are not faulty.

The board has an ID of TP229500 and is made by ISPRACONTROLS.
I am not sure what the relay is controlling. A PCB layout would be useful?

When not chattering the freezer seems to be working fine.

I have a Whirlpool AFG8080IX which is the stainless version. It is also about 2.5 years old but my clicking and flashing display started when it was just over a year old. Does yours stop clicking etc if you press the fast freez button? I didn’t take out the extended warranty which I am quite pleased about after reading your thread. I have noticed that this seems to be a very common fault on all types of whirlpool refrigeration equipment, perhaps if everyone got together and made a claim under the supply of goods act as it appears that these freezers are “not fit for purpose”. In the mean time I am trying to locate a replacement relay to see if this fixes the problem.

I negotiated with the insurers and used their money to buy a new board from this site. Fixed the freezer and has worked OK ever since. Took about 5 minutes!

I compared the old and new boards and the only difference I can see is that they have uprated a capacitor from 16V to 25v. Its capacitor C3 (100uf). On examination this capacitor looks a little domed in appearance.

I have kept my old board and will swap this capacitor if the new board starts to play up.

This ties in with some information on similar faults with other Whirlpool freezers.

If you do swap the capacitor, let me know if it works.
