In strict confidence but afew points to ponder –
MFI/AM – The company goes bust one day and reappears the next. The old company now has no liability to pay its engineers, pay for its stock or honour it guarantee to its customers. The new company equally has no liability to honour any guarantees issued by the old company. New company starts trading and indicates to the engineers that it wants them to restart repairs – but it has no product in the market so what do the engineers repair. Old in warranty calls are not covered and as many of the retail outlets have closed likelyhood of sales is minimal. Do these clowns think we are stupid – obviously!!

ISDAL – Two weeks ago one of our collegues went out to repair a R600a fridge freezer. On finding it short of gas he asked ISDAL if he should recharge it with refrigerant. Receiving the go ahead he regassed the unit and left the home of the customer. Some couple of days later the fridge exploded blowing both doors off and damaging the kitchen wall. At this time ISDAL is refusing to replace the ff and holding the service agent liable for both the ff and customer damage. I guess that the defrost heater caused the R600a to combust by increasing its pressure to the point where it ignited. Whatever, I find the action of ISDAL reprehensible.

    Your comments please.

ISDA, Difficult one on 1st looking at it. I’m surprised he asked permission to top up the system? I would have thought he would have identified the cause/leak, sorted that, then gone ahead with it? Due to the combustible nature, my guys won’t top up a S.O.G. if not a brand new, or recently had system work if there is no visible signs of a leak.

It looks like a case of this is how the cookie crumbles. Sh*t happens. Best thing he can do is pass everything to his insurers and ask them if they can get the cause investigated, the insurers do their best to appoint the blame to the right party as it is in their interest as well as the client’s. If they feel it is a product failure, they will try & counter-claim from the makers.

I do agree regards the way ISDA seems to have dismissed the affair, even if only morally, ISDA could have at least arranged an uplift of the product, and an independent inspection & pass the cost on accordingly.

Comment from R600 is applicable on this one I think, he is the most experienced with both the refrigerant, and ISDA.

The MFI thing, several of us are trying to point people in the right direction, they Won’t get paid historically, and we all know it will happen again very soon. I think what it is, they are hoping to recoup some losses from them by other means over time, they won’t get the chance I feel, and will probably exacerbate the debt. If they have little or nothing else to do, and MFI were a significant part of their operation, then I can understand them clutching at straws; but like Yourself and one or two others, we are realists.

Difficult times and it is the smaller agencies that are going to suffer in this “crisis” which is fuelled mainly by the press.

Here’s the stupid thing, I’m still looking for another engineer, at least there are some out there, but not in my area.

    Re: Antonio Merloni/MFI/ISDAL

    Hi

If the engineer on site replaced the drier which is standard good practice then on vacuum the engineer should have left it for a minimum of 2 minutes in vacuum to see if there was a leak present which would have shown up.

If on the other hand the engineer fitted a self cutting clamp over valve then to be honest he has NOT carried out correct proceedure on an flammable refrigerant and just shot more refrigerant into a system that could have had a restriction which would then over pressurise.

Having too much refrigerant in the system compiled with a leak in the fridge compartment making the mixture of air and R600a a perfect match to go bang.

If the correct amount of refrigerant was used then it wouldnt have gone bang as its gonna be millions to 1 to get the correct air/R600a/temprature and then the correct spark to ignite.

Correct procedure is to cut off the cut off the charge stubb and the drier thus releasing all the low pressure gas and also high pressure gas then vac out and then weigh in the correct amount normally about 75 grams for a 5′ F/F & 60grams for a under counter.

Yes I know I dont follow it as I live flame braze and go by vacuum pressure.” Do as I say and NOT as I do”

Bryan – the discussion is about the way that ISDAL responded to the problem not how the problem should be avoided. Without looking at the appliance they decided that the engineer was at fault and left him to sort out the mess. As you are well aware they do not have a qualified refrigeration engineer at Wakefield.
Whilst I’m on about it another manufacturers appliance exploded last week due to a leak in the evaporator and ignition by bare defrost heater.

    Hi Ian

I suspect that the engineer has been informed that they must inform there insurance company as the last engineer on site and resposible to a certain point.

His insurance company would then claim from the manufacturers if it is found that the engineer wasnt negligent.

ISDAL would uplift the appliance and return it to Melvin & Richard to dismantle to find out how and why.

As you are well aware they do not have a qualified refrigeration engineer at Wakefield.

Melvin has a large amount of experience on the refrigeration side.

I have asked the question unofficially and was informed that IF this had happened then the appliance would be uplifted but I could not get an answer to if this had happened or not.I didnt really expect anything else.

    Re: Antonio Merloni/MFI/ISDAL

    Hi

The only way out for this engineer if ISDAL is not going to inspect the appliance is to pay up and remove the old appliance as it would then become his legal property.he would then need to have the appliance inspected to find out what acctually caused the fault and if it was an internal leak.
Then bears the question..Should the engineer have noticed the leak if the vacuum was carried out correctly.

The last inspections I carried out was for the Siltal brand on behalf of graham @AIS which found 2 out of 5 appliances with factory defects,In fact I still have one in my garage.

If the engineer is 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure he carried out the work correctly then it would be his call..The old appliance is his property after all.

Bryan – Once again I ask you to note the content of the War Room is to be kept confidential. As a result of asking (officially or not) this will be tracked back to the engineer and likely cause grief.
