ParticipantHi, newbie here … our trusty old Smeg washer died and as we are now retired and broke could only afford a cheap machine, we went for the hoover hds 556 ms-80 and I have several comments which someone may be able to help with … forgive the length of the post … (1) Whilst there is a salt adjustment illustration in the manual there is no device inside the salt filler and I wonder if this is the reason why everything comes out “cloudy” (2) The upper tray area is quite ‘deep’ OK but it does mean that the lower tray is remarkably shallow ie I can only just fit a 10″ dinner plate in the slots (ALL our plates therefore are too big) ! … maybe I should have checked this before I bought it but I didn’t, it seems a very basic design fault ! (3) Everything comes out smeary … I have checked carefully and followed all of the directions but to no avail. Any advice most welcome. Regards Roger

Are you sure the spray arms can turn freely when the dinner plates are loaded? Give the arms a birl when the baskets are pushed in. See if they knock against the plates.
Upper baskets can sometimes be raised or lowered. Yours might be in the lower position, but it depends if you have a really cheap machine; you might just have the one height level without adjustment.
Try using separate powder (or single-function tablets), rinse-aid and salt.A reasonable detergent-only tablet is Tesco “Value” tablets; or Lidl’s “W5” tablets. Typically £1.80 for box of 30 tablets. Tested by “Which?”
Cloudy, smeary dishes are usually too much rinse aid. Lidl’s “W5” rinse-aid is okay too, and sold in large bottles.
Don’t use multi-function tablets, they might contribute to your problem of smeary dishes, with their extra rinse-aid.
Turn the rinse-aid level down to “1” or “2”; on cheap machines, this is usually a small screw-like pointer inside the rinse-aid fill lid.
I have a sinking feeling that your Hoover slimline model is of Chinese origin. In that case, avoid using 3/4/5/All/Max-in-One/Quantums. There have been instances of overfoaming detergents short-circuiting Chinese-Origin machines.

Evenin’ T.
I really didn’t want to answer this one. Roger has replaced his SMEG with a Chinese-built Haier slimline dishwasher with the Hoover badge on the front. Putting ‘haier AND dishwasher’ into Search, or ‘chinese AND dishwasher’ will pull up a slew of rather horrifying results. I’m sorry, but it’s just a disaster waiting to happen.
As far as I can tell from the diagrams, there is no high/low setting on the top basket, so that particular problem is probably unsolvable.
As far as detergents go, any “pre-packaged”, ie tablet or gel ball will overdose the machine by at least one third on every wash. You should only ever operate one of these on a powder, as it is generally a low froth product, with the salt and rinse aid topped off regularly. Once it’s actually running, never, ever, open the door…….. Until it’s finished, that is.
When it does fail, please buy something decent. You absolutely, definitely, will get what you’re prepared to pay for.
