ParticipantI have a Bosch KGU32120GB/04 fridge/freezer, which is several years old, and other than the noisy compressor it seems to be working just fine.
My question is around the compressor run-time expected for any fridge/freezer unit (obviously my interest is this unit!) and how long on a “normal” day you would expect the compressor to run for and how much power it would take. It seems that my unit’s compressor is running more than it is off – is this normal ? Now, I know it obviously depends on how much food is in the freezer, and how many times doors open and how long they are open for….but y’know, these are not excessive and in my case probably less than a normal household seeing as I have another small “daily-use” fridge in the kitchen.
The compressor specs state 150W…so is it normal for this unit to use 1.5kW per day, as that kinda indicates it is on for atleast 10 hours of the day ?
Seals are all in tact, temperature LEDs read -18/+4’C, no frosty flakes in the freezer compartment, everything is well frozen, fridge is cold. It is only the fact that I noticed the compressor running most times I go into the kitchen that raised any awareness – maybe I am just paranoid, and there is nothing wrong ?
Thanks for any input

ParticipantWhat sometimes happens with these F/F’s is that the compressors ‘weaken’ asthey age and therefore need to work slightly harder or longer to ensure correct temps.
Do you find that the temps drop quite quickly after having the doors open for any time longer than usual ? i.e If loading the freezer after a shopping trip ?November 26, 2008 at 8:09 pm #269581Hudders

No I don’t see the temperatures drop at all (well…the LED display does not indicate this).
Am I safe to assume that the LED display is correct ? I have no reason not to disbelieve it.November 28, 2008 at 10:33 pm #269582cockney steve

more correctly, you would be using 1.5 Kw H….that is, kilowatt hours(Kw being a measure of current flow rate) 🙂 1 Kwh =1 unit = ~15p…therefore costs about 23p a day to run.
It sounds as though it’s function is OK, just that it’s working harder to get there….as Paul said…the sealed-unit compressor can get worn, pump less efficiently, valves not seat as well, etc….this means it works longer to achieve the same end result.
the other factor that cannot be discounted , is partial loss of refrigerant gas…..not unheard of, same end result….eventually theif the loss continued, the compressor would attempt to run 24/7 ,the fridge would not cool at all and the compressor motor would burn out.

There are realisticly 2 options here
1 the machine has lost some gas therefore taking longer to cool down2 you happened to notice the compressor running and it is playing on your mind making you notice it more
personally i would sugest option 1 but as long as it is running and maintaning tempurature i would not worry too much
personally i regas a fridge for 65 quid so just remain vigilant and find a local engineer just in caseDecember 2, 2008 at 1:50 pm #269584Hudders

Thanks for the replies and the “correction” Cockney_Steve…I *did* mean KwH, honest 8O.
Maybe I should ask the question in a different way….how much electricity does a “normal” fridge freezer typically use in 24 hours ? 1KwH ? 0.5KwH ?
