I had a few Bosch machines where the heating element frazzles where the connections go on and smells awful. Like burning bakelite.

had a few that after fitting carbons brushes they spark like the clappers, genuine ones seem to help but have ended up fitting new motors to them in the end.

this rings a bell of a bosch i changed the carbons on a few years back, afterwards a smell that i dident feel at all safe with, once i took machine back to workshop i took motor apart and realised one of the brushes was sticking in holder and not free, once free worked ok.

i did find i needed to run the machine for quiet a few washer until brushed bedded in then motor smell dissapeared.

i only use gen carbons on these motors now

Genuine Bosch brushes tend to stick. Before fitting, ease the brush in and out several times, checking for tightness. If it is tight, extract it and look at the narrow sides. You will see where it has been rubbing, ease it a little with emery cloth , and re-try. Dont overdo it.

I think there’s a kind of tab inside those holders like the one you have to release on the old Hotpoints. You can feel the resistance as you push in the new brush but it releases (the brush goes past it) once fully in. If you pull the brush out again you can see the imprint along the side. I sometimes do the same as neptune and scratch a little groove in it with the point of a knife.

The other day I took apart a bad sparker, I think it was same model as this thread, and completely cleaned the motor inside out, even to the point of cleaning the commutator gaps out with the edges of cardboard strips. Worked a treat after that.

I find about 1 in 20 Bosch motors will simply not accept a brush change. The motor may run for a while, but fails in 3-6 months. The occasional one just sparks up straight away and will not settle down.

The locking tab in the brush holder can be bent back further with a small straight-bladed screwdriver, which eases fitment.

    Re: bosch electrical smell

Just been out to a WFL2000 which I had fitted new brushes to 2 months ago. I had done the job with exceptional care (just like I always do 🙂 ) as I particularly didn’t want a callback due to remote location.
Found one brush shiny and one blackened. On withdrawing the old brushes I noticed there was plenty of resistance from the retaining tab on the “good” side but none at all on the “bad” side. This doesn’t make much sense to me but I didn’t want to investigate further because machine is in cubby hole and I had already given it a good clean up last time.
Any thoughts? Will I be going back again in another couple of months?
    Mike.
PS There was no smell reported but this seemed like a good thread to use for the context.
