wont work on glass though, or stainless steel. The contactless ones need a dark, matt surface to read accuatly.

Maplin do an infrared one at £29.95 – I’ve got one and it does the job!!
Temperature range is -50 degrees to 280 degrees so it’s suitable for ovens and fridges. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=46033
Order code – N28BJ.Steve.

same one as I have (use it for tyre temperatures) if you read the instructions it states it will not be accurate on a reflective surface and if pointed at glass will read the temp inside rather than on the outside.

I think this one is new to Maplins. Sent them a tech query and they assure me it is fine for shiny/stainless steel/mirrored/glass surface plastic plastic covered metal……..

we shall see, got a job tomorrow with it.
LL had new oven installed at tenants request and now she’s saying it’s too hot for her 3 yo and my old touch probe is knacked. Couldn’t believe the price. I was after one of the other more expensive ones they do but both out of stock.
quick check this evening, seemed to work ok and working at tolerances stated. Apply tolerances to the testing and should be fine.
Tis tiny though, and only 35grammes, no good if your one for having a hugh zorst on ur motor 😉

If you’re only buying one to use on the odd occasion, why worry about surfaces? You can always write on a bit of the surface with a dryboard marker and wipe off after. That way you can get away with a cheapo one off e-bay. 😉

Mike. It’s cheap enough for use on the odd occasion. I will try the dryboard marker tip though. I’ll try with and without the marker and see how I get on….. good tip though.

I got a tech reply from Maplins saying this one will work on shiney/SS surfaces.
I tried this one and it seemed to be ok apart from the SS control panel on the oven I tested. Kept giving really low reading, tried the magic board marker, it helped but I think it was the thermometer at fault. The glass door peaked at 71 degrees and the SS control panel was even hotter (scalding hot) but didn’t get a reading above 40 degrees.
Tried it again at home on our SS kettle, watched the temperature rise to about 40 degrees and it just stopped there.
Back to Maplins, money back and will have to wait until one of the better ones come in stock.
Don’t buy this one…….

Makes you wonder if the oven manufacturers were using dodgy equipment when they tested that oven. :rolls: “But it seems a bit hot” “No, no, this fantastical non-contact infra red thingy says it’s OK”
