i have had many long and pointless conversations with whirlpool over this and they have told me that if either of the two boards are faulty you have to change both as they say the two will not talk to each other,
its normally a £3-£400 pound repairhope this helps

Hiya,
The boards changed after week 30 2003.
If the machine is newer than this it already has the new boards.
Only the older boards cannot talk to the newer ones.
Once you change the boards on a machine it won’t need both boards in the future.
The rating plate should be marked to indicate the upgraded boards are installed. If the first six numbers of the serial is 110330 or lower, both boards. 110331 or higher, 1 board could be changed.

Couple of points to consider here.
Are you sure about the serial number? this is one of the 1st models of the side by side and most were fitted with the original boards ie: before week 30 2003. IIRC the older back boards have a black plastic cover and the newer one have a cream coloured coverIf it is one of the later ones chattering can be caused by either the front, back or both boards
Most times it is the back but I have had a few with front boards only causing this problem.
Part number for front board (bare PCB) is 481221848184John

Hiya,
The whole thing hinges on which board is actually causing the fault.
Whirlpool say change both every time. It makes them more money.
I’m in the enviable position of being able to take both boards with me.
It’s not often I’ve had to fit both boards. One or the other has always cured it.Whirlpool themselves are the ones that put out the service bulletin about the boards and only having to change one on the newer electronics.
I even had to mark the older machines when I changed both boards so that in future we would only have to fit 1.Hope this helps.
