ParticipantHi. My Whirlpool AWZ 121 has stopped producing heat. Turns OK, so getting electric. Found advice on this site, took heater element out, tested with ohmeter, seems to be open circuit. Going to get new one to fit.
My only concern is this. How is it held in place? At the moment it seems to be just the pressure of the steel sheet at the back of it. The old one had slipped a bit. There are 4 holes on the heater, which seem to line up with 4 holes on the steel sheet, but on the old one there didn’t seem to be anything in these holding it in place. Should there be?
Cheers,

Yes, there should be 2 bolts holding it in place. 😯 One in the top left hole and the bottom right.
Find 2 bolts about 1/2″ long with a thread that matches the hole. The thread on the bolt should be able to cut itself into the aluminium quite easily. As a guide, the bolt heads fit an 8mm socket. Practice threading the bolts on the old unit to get it right.Power off!! :plug:
Hope that helps,
Steve.

thanks. I’m sure there were no bolts in it. I can’t even see any sign that there once were any bolts.
I’ve actually paid for a pdf of the service manual (though not arrived yet). Hopefully that will say what guage/length they should be, but presumably any self tapping type things that are the right dia to cut a thread and not too long to bottom out should do.

The originals are not exactly self tapping – they are 1/2″ long (head to tip of thread) 8mm head bolts with a very slight taper on the last 2 threads. I’ve used ordinary bolts with a small washer many times before when the originals were missing. Put the heater unit on the floor and with a socket press and turn the bolt and it will thread. Once you have a thread, remove the bolt and install the heater. 😉
I say try it on the old heater unit in case you get problems first time. The pdf is unlikely to reveal the bolt sizes; they will presume they haven’t gone missing……Steve.

8mm head = M6 thread.
