For those of you who have an EXCELLENT memory, folks at this forum successfully helped me fix a botched repair job on my Clatronic dryer. Well, it’s been two years and I’ve got some heating problems again.

Here’s the model numbers again: I purchased a Clatronic dryer made in the UK. Model number WT6010. There is another number also: M 37686. From what I have gathered, it is the same as some Creda and Hotpoint models. (A search of my nickname will give you all the posts from the previous fix.) Here’s the problem:

Motor runs and drum spins, but no heat. I’ve checked the following with the dryer plugged in, the door shut, but the motor OFF.

    1. I have power going to the stats. I have no idea how much voltage is supposed to be here, but my meter reads at about 100 volts. The same meter shows 220 volts going into the dryer. I guess I just assumed there would be 220 volts here also.

    2. The stats show continuity.

    3. I see 3 wires going to the elements, all 3 show the same 100 volts at the element connection.

    4. The elements all show continuity, but I’m not sure how many ohms there supposed to show. I cannot adjust my meter to 0 ohms. It bottoms out at about 3. When I test the elements at the RX1 scale, it reads about 3 ohms. This is probably a dumb question, but why should there be power going to the elements with the motor not running?

I’m no expert, but I can do basic repairs as my last post will show. I just need someone to point me in the right direction.

Joe, save you life here, and pull the plug, please. Set the test meter to Ohms, break the circuit at each thermostat in turn and measure across it. You should get a very low resistance reading. If you don’t, the safety stat will have failed (rather than burnt like last time). Part number is still 1701583 (http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/c0009556 … mostat-kit) and Dave will probably still be able to send you a set.

In the UK, these thermostats fail constantly – I purchase 5 sets at a time for my van stock, so this is still your most likely problem.

For the record, UKWhitegoods will not condone or assist in any live testing of an appliance. It is not usually neccessary and it’s damned dangerous.

Oops, I didn’t mean to imply that I checked resistance with it plugged in. I unplugged it to check for continuity. Yes, I have a low reading on the stats. Thanks for your concern. I will take note of your advice.

Just to make sure, I tested the dryer again – unplugged. I pulled the plug and tested the stats and they test good. I definitely have continuity. With the dryer still unplugged (!) I also tested the heating elements. I see four of them, each one reads identical – very low resistance, it reads 3 ohms, but it might actually be 0 since I can’t adjust my meter to 0. I read somewhere that the elements should read a higher resistance. Is this my problem?
