I’ve removed the motor as the brushes need replacing but how do I replace them as it looks like I have to take one end of the motor off to gain access.

Looks like its one of the ones that needs complete (£207) motor. 😥

I would await a second opinion though. 😉

Well, if you’re brave and organised, it can be done. You’ll need a pair of THESE for a start, a soldering iron, Torx bit set and possibly a hammer.

Make a witness mark along one side of the motor, so as you know how it’s all going to re-align, then undo the four through-bolts. Pull off the end frame at the pulley end, then pull out the armature. Coils should lift away, leaving the end frame with the brush plate in it. This will unscrew and lift out. Clean the carbon dust off everything whilst you’ve got it apart. Snip the old brushes away and insert new ones into the sliders, making sure that they are held by the springs on the side (not the top) of the brushes, to prevent them pushing down the sleeve. Trim and solder the leads into place and re-assemble. When it’s all back together, lift the springs through the access slots, the brushes should drop down and the springs should sit on top of them.

And your mother’s brother should indeed be called Robert.
