    Recently this dishwasher has started to exhibit the above problem.

    I can switch it on, select the program, shut the door, and I will then hear a pump running. It has done this in the past, i’m guessing to empty any water out first before starting the program, but this time it won’t stop and won’t allow the wash program to proceed.

    I have tried the following;

    With the machine on, hold the start/pause button for 5s until it starts to flash, then closed the door. This enables the quick drain feature. This works and I hear a bleep which usually means it has finished the job, however the pump still runs. This indiciates that the pump is on a timer because the beeps starts after a set time, but won’t swtich off.

    Poured water into the basin, which emptied successfully. This again points me to the drain pump not switching off.

    What could be causing this problem? What can I do to try and fix this? Can the pump be damaged by it running for a long period, without any water present? I’m not sure if this is connected, but I used a Finish dishwasher cleaner on it. Could there be some crud somewhere that has got dislodged from the clean and caused this?

    Water in the tray under the machine will activate a float switch mechanism which will run the drain pump until the float is re-set. It bypasses the timer control system completely.

    Drain the base, then find the leak.

    Ah, now that is interesting because recently the machine kept on tripping the fuse. When the engineer came out he mentioned that a tray was full of water and was the cause of the power cut to the sockets. He said that something had come loose, which caused the leak. I wonder whether that same leak has caused this problem. I’m a little suprised that the machine would trip a fuse if this tray was full.

    I have heard of this tray on other threads, is it easy to get to? Does the machine need to come out, my wife mentioned that the engineer did not need to take the dishwasher out when he did it.

    What about the pump running continuously for long periods without any water to drain out. Could it get damaged?

    there is a panel beneath the door that can be unscrewed to get access, ensure it is unplugged first. Unlikely the pump will be damaged, more worrying though is that the water may have got on to the circulation pump motor which has caused the trip. Whatever, sounds like you have a leak that needs sorting.

    I figured that it may be a re-occuring leak after Penguin45’s post. Nice one, I’ll have a look and post the outcome.
