ParticipantMy Ariston has developed a fault in that it stays in the wash cycle when anything but the * temperature setting is used. If we changed to the * when ‘stuck’ , it will move on. First I suspected the heater element but testing this showed it to be in very good condition and working. The thermistor was open circuit , so I replaced that. No change in symptoms. The program selector sometimes made a strange grindy noise but always washed ok.
So , looking at the control module itself , or the programme switch ?
At the same time , looking at a replacement… The thing is actually ‘built-under’ because dimensions of it allow it to be so , if you pull off the plinth. Other machines that would fit in ok , without paying the premium for specific built-in units are various BEKO , and an Indesit.
Seeing comments here that Indesit=Ariston=rubbish, and ours is only about 5 years old, our previous machine was a Zanussi and lasted donkeys years, should I bite the bullet and go for a good named built-in, or is the BEKO worth a punt?
Thanks for any replies.December 30, 2008 at 11:21 am #272556cgkstevenson

Just to add to this :
Pulled out the control unit – PCB looks ok , no obvious signs of trauma on the board, and also checked resistance on the temperature control knob at all the various settings , and it showed proper graduation running from 30 deg setting through to 80 and max.
Maybe by trying again with everything reseated , connectors etc this will work again… ? Don’t hold out much hope , but anyone with more experience with this ?
thanks

Check connections from the other end of the wires with a meter to the heater/ thermistor therefore proving wiring connections ok. Power off when doing so.

From ‘the other end of the wires’ ? – other end of the wires from where?
Do you have a wiring diagram , otherwise all I have is a large bundle of wires running from programme selector to the control unit and back out.
Logic says the variable resistor for heater control goes straight to the control unit , but that’s a couple of red wires, none of this is colour coded.
thanks
