Gorenje is to lay off 270 workers as a result of reorganisation after the recent takeover of the company by Chinese company Hisense.
Reports also say that technically 1720 people would be sacked with 1450 being offered employment under new contracts.
Trade unions are resisting this move by the company though the results of their efforts are uncertain at this time. They say that the company’s poor performance is not as a result of the employees but that of senior management and are calling for them to be investigated and to take responsibility for the company’s performance.
Last year Gorenje turned over €1.2 billion but netted a loss of €34 million.
