ParticipantDear all,
Our w/machine is just over 3years old and today made noises (as though something’s trapped) during the spin cycle.
My wife’s making her usual ‘we need a new one’ comments. (She says the noise can’t be a wire from a bra starp because her’s don’t have them). Can someone advise if this is something I can investigate and where do I start?
I’m happy to start taking it apart so long as the machine is reasonably serviceable from a user point of view.
If not, is it something that I should call someone in for?Alternatively should I be thinking we need a new machine?
Having read some of the debate about machines on here it looks like the cheaper machines are designed to fail after 12 months and that I should look at a Miele or ISE10 – ours is lucky to have got this far! It’s very confusing and seems far too expensive! Does everyone have significant breakdowns on a regular basis?
Options seem to be to pay high start up costs (which I can’t afford) or pay less for a budget machine and either insure it (not preferred) or hope it runs for longer than the mfr guarantee. (My machine has needed no maintenance so far).
NB. I feel the ISE machine may not be an option: I found only 1 stockist for the North East – based in Scun thorpe – which I feel is too far away for delivery and ongoing maintenance in case of issues….or even after the guarantee has run out. Thanks

With the machine you have now, the only way is up! If you do get a new one I would suggest you consider a Bosch.
It is worth taking the heater unit out of your machine and shining a torch into the tub to check for foreign objects. To remove the heater you take the back off the machine and slacken the central clamp nut then prise the black rubber seal away from the tub.January 9, 2009 at 8:18 pm #272727peteuk

Thanks for the advice.
I think this is a great site and I feel feedback is useful for other innocents like me.
Our machine has gone back to it’s normal self before I could intervene so fingers crossed for a while yet. (My wife didn’t wait for me to investigate which was lucky for me because I wasn’t sure how I’d recognise the heater… told you a total innocent!)
I have a follow up question though, and I don’t mean to upset anyone about machine quality etc:
When looking at replacement machines, Lewis’s had an Indesit for £276 delivered even after paying for a 5 year guarantee.
To the uninitiated this seems cheap even if it has to be disposed of after the 5 years. The cheapest Bosch was £399 for the 5 year guarantee and this site suggests that ‘low end’ Bosch machines may be of ‘similar’ quality to the Indesit. Other posts also suggest that Bosch machines are not immune from problems.
After the guarantee my wife’s immediate reaction will be to replace any machine in case of failure anyway – despite it being unfriendly to the environment. The cost of repairs makes a new machine seem cheaper.
If I had gone down the replacement route would the Indesit have been a total mistake even at that price? I’d appreciate your feedback – thanksJanuary 9, 2009 at 9:30 pm #272728helo_75
Participantbosch machines are in no way comparable to indesit tat, even at what you describe as ‘lower end’
however you look at it, indesit machines are poor value for money
and, of course all machines have problems.. its the severity and ease of fix that seem to be the issue
i reckon i change ONE bosch pcb to every HUNDRED indesit pcb
and i bet im not far out at that

Another thing to consider. If you buy a cheap, poor quality machine and purchase a five year warranty that will not compensate you for the hours, days, weeks even that you will spend waiting to get it repaired on a regular basis. 😉

Dear all,
Thanks for the replies. Certainly food for thought.
Hopefully I won’t have to decide for a while yet as it seems my wife and I will argue over which replacement model to buy (assuming we have the money around us to have a choice). -
