This is an old (20 years?) machine, I think manufactured by Philips (the back label states Philips / Whirlpool).

Has been operating reasonably well but recently had problems with the drum. Initially it was a metallic shrieking on starting, which stopped after a few seconds and then all OK. Recently, the drum wouldn’t rotate at first, or just crept very, very slowly – then it would come to life after a few minutes. Now it won’t rotate at all.

Timer and heater are still operational as normal. Machine makes the ticking noise which could be heard whilst it paused between rotations (it is a forward / reverse drum), but all the time. I can feel a vibration at the end of the motor shaft by the pulley connection.

Any ideas? Is this repairable (at a reasonable cost) or is the machine too old for that?

Drive motor is enabled by a start/run capacitor. This will lose it’s “boost” over the years, and the motor will become reluctant to run. It’s THIS ONE if you wish to replace it.

Metallic noises are worrying. The tension pulleys for the belt wear, as does the rear bearing. allowing the drum to scrape against the back panel or lower ducting. Bit of observation required to figure that one out.

Stay safe, power off if you intend to repair this ypurself.

Many thanks for the quick response. I’ve ordered the part and hopefully that will solve the problem.

    Thanks again.

I’ve now received the capacitor and installed it, but this doesn’t seem to be the answer (or not all of it). Machine ran for about 10 minutes, and then stalled. Investigation with the back panels off confirms that the belt is OK and that the drum bearing is all right (drum rotates freely with the belt disconnected).

I could still feel a vibration at the end of the motor shaft by the pulley connection with the power on, and with the belt off the motor started running again. Refitting the belt and turning the power back on resulted in the drum rotating for a couple of minutes, and then stalling again.

Turning the end of the motor shaft with the power off and the belt removed, it rotates fairly freely – can spin round quite easily. It will occasionally stop at a ‘sticky’ point, but this is quite easily turned past by hand. However, even if it is rotating perfectly freely by hand with the power off, as soon as the power is applied (still with the belt off) the shaft ‘freezes’ quite solid and cannot, or only barely, move.

I assume from all this that there is a problem with the motor. Any ideas? And given the age of the machine, any chance of this being repairable at a reasonable cost?

Motor bearings? Any play through the shaft will cause the rotor to run out of true and it will jam. New motor not a cost effective repair on a machine of this age.

It’s just possible that one of the motor -bearings has had the cage collapse.

As P45 said, the end result is to jam the motor………it MAY be possible to dismantle and fit a new bearing, but doubtful.

I have one from my son’s machine , here…rivetted and the pulley is shrink-fitted.

    Junk! 😡
